I have a 73 Ranchero and haven't had any problems with any lights working until now. I started it up and notice there weren't any brake lights, so I checked fuses and bulbs everything was good and changed the emergency flasher relay. There are turn signals running lights everything but brake lights. Someone said that the brake lights run off the emergency flasher relay and I don't know if this is true. I checked the brake switch for power with a test light an found it doesn't have any, so I checked the slot where the emergency flasher relay is and it has no power either. Has anyone had this problem? |

The brake lights do not run through the hazard flasher itself, but on your 1973 the brake light switch and the hazard flasher are fed from the same fuse; the panel legend lists it as the emergency flasher and stop lamp fuse (fuse 8 on the Ranchero panel). That is why both your brake switch and the flasher socket are dead while the turn signals (which run on a different, key-on fuse) still work. So the problem is upstream of both: the feed to that fuse.
A fuse can look good and still have no power reaching it. With your test light:
1. Check both ends of the brake/hazard fuse with the key off. That circuit is hot all the time, so the test light should light on at least one end.
2. If neither end is hot, the feed to that fuse cavity is gone: look for a burned or corroded fuse clip, a loose fuse panel, or a broken wire on the back of the panel.
3. If one end is hot and the other is not, the fuse is bad even though it looks fine.
4. If the fuse is hot on both ends but the brake switch is still dead, the wire from the fuse to the switch is broken.
Once the switch has power, the brake lights go from the switch through the turn signal switch in the column to the rear lamps, so that is the next place to check if they still do not light.
