Hi,
I've got the old F-150 mentioned above, but there are a few issues.
I have the original knob but it's lost its "threads" ( or however it used to be affixed to the end of the lever). And I have the rubber boot that goes on the floor, but it still doesn't' look right.

Did the lever have a "cover" or stocking that slipped over the bare metal lever? Seems like it needs something.

Can anyone offer a clue?
Thanks,
Newbie Seattle

On the 1992 to 1996 F-150 the factory knob is pressed onto the lever, not threaded, which is why there are no threads to grab. It comes off by tapping it straight up from underneath. If yours has gone loose, the simplest fix is a replacement knob. Press-on knobs are still sold for these trucks; check that the listing covers the '92 to '96 F-150 five-speed.

As for a cover on the lever: the shift boot itself is the cover. It's held to the floor by four #2 Phillips screws, and it runs all the way up the lever, slipping over a lip on the shaft just below the knob. Under it there's a separate rubber gasket that seals out air and water. If your boot only covers the floor and leaves the lever bare, it's probably the wrong boot or a cut-down one, and a full-length replacement boot for the '92 to '96 F-150 will fix the look.
