my shifter will not go into nuetral and the car is stuck in first gear. I did remove the panels above the shifter and the rubber ring that connects the shifter to the rest of the assembely is broke off. Is this what is keeping me from goint into Nuetral and other gears? Also will fixing that one ring take care of the problem? Any help on this is very appreciated. I love my SHO but I do not know much about mechanics and dont want to get rid of the car or go through the BS of a dealership.
Thank You

Howzit smoke,
if you are not aware of it, the early sho came with a cable linkage for the transmission, which is actually a transmission from a truck, so a typical rod linkage did not fit and ford did not make a rod retro fit until a couple of years later. aftermarket linkage can be found from the sho shop, which i found to be a valuable resource for my first sho. if your gearbox is stuck in first gear, i would look at the linkage first. if you are a hard driver, then the problem may be internal ie. broken syncro or spider gears etc. i hope it turns out to be a minor problem. i eventually sold my 89 and now have a 95 ATX, which i will be selling soon, as i recently purchased a 99 Grand Marquis and looking forward to dressing it up for the street. good luck. merk |
