Hey guys,
I have a 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis. It has the 302 5.0L EFI engine, it's stock engine.
1.) What is the largest most powerful engine that will fit in this car without too many heavy modifications?
2.) What is the maximum horsepower/torque than can be realized in this stock 302 engine?
3.) How much power will the original stock automatic transmission handle?
Thanks guys. As you can tell I'm trying to get all the ponies under the hood of this merc boat as I can. But I need your help, what engine should I use?
I would like to see something around 500 horsepower, however I realize that with the 302 at least, perhaps 400 horsepower is a more realistic goal. Tips or pointers? Let's hear 'em!

1.) A 460 will fit, as will a 351, although both of these engines may create a hood clearance problem. A 351 with aluminum heads weighs about the same as the stock 5.0. Relocate the battery to the trunk to partially restore the front to rear weight balance. Headers are available but both of these engines will require some exhaust fabrication.
2.) In a street 5.0, 300 HP is easy and 350 is possible without a blower. Usually to get around 400+HP in a streetable 5.0 requires a power adder, such as blower or nitrous.
3.) As long as the stock AOD is fresh, it should be OK up to 400HP for street use but if you like to drag race and use slicks you should get a performance rebuild done with a B+M kit. Install a supplemental transmission oil cooler and the tranny will last longer.
4.) The simplest performance upgrade is to swap out the gears. This will give you an instant kick in the pants. With as heavy a car as the CV/GM, use 3.73 or 4.10 gears. The overdrive is a .67 ratio so even on the highway, engine RPM's are reasonable.
5.) Check out "stangparts.com". This is a Mustang only salvage yard in N. Georgia and they have all kinds of Ford parts at good prices. A complete 5.0 EFI engine is $500 to $750 and this may be less expensive than building one yourself.
6.) A company called "Windsor/Fox" is a specialist in Ford engine swaps. I don't know how to reach them but they are suppose to have wiring harnesses, motor mounts and headers, etc. for engine swaps.
7.) Contact "Superchips" in Longwood, FL for a selection of performance chips.
Good luck with your project,

You can get a lot out of your stock 302 by swapping out the stock Vic cam that makes the Mojave Desert seem steep. The cams that came in these cars are what made the power output so low. So, if it were me, if your block is roller cam, I would put in an E303 cam. That should give you a good power boost from the stock 150 to about 190. Next you can take out the upper and lower intake and get something that breathes more, and I would ash can the speed density system and switch to mass air. The stock heads are fine because they are the same that come on 86-93 5.0 Mustangs. After that, I would get dual exhaust with an H-Pipe, and no cats. Then your engine should be free flowing and the power should be about 270-280 hp, which would make these big sleds move. This suggestion may not help you at all, and may be completely pointless, but I got really bored. Oh, some shorty headers wouldn't hurt and P.S. the AOD's that came on Vics are junk, I would recommend a rebuild by Lentech. |
