Hi everyone, I'm the proud owner of a 86 Grand Marquis, aka the lazyboy on wheels! It's my daily driver and it's been through a lot with myself, i've pulled trucks out of the ditch with it, raced and beaten those damn rice rockets, and been in numerous accident without any damage!!! What a beast!, it's got the orginal 302 efi with an AOD tranny with 273, 000km's on it and still going strong! I recently found a deal to get 2 460's one's a 78 one's a 79, that together would make a complete engine, and for only $300 Canadian! I'm soooo tempted to buy them, do a quick rebuild and plop it in the merc. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this swap. What do i need? mounts? bigger rad? will the AOD bolt up to it? what about the efi that the car currently has, but the 460 doesn't, should i get an efi setup for the 460, or can i convert the 86's computer to the 460 efi setup? can i make the 86 marquis computer so that it would work with a carb setup on the 460? i'll probably need a new driveshaft right?

Thanks Everyone

Jared

I would leave it carbed, then ya don't need to worry about the computer and all that. You'll need new motor mounts, and the AOD won't work. It's a swap all us guys with these cars wanna do, but it takes some work. I only know of one car that's had it done. It was a Crown Vic that was on ebay. There was a discussion on it on crownvic.net awhile back, in the 5.0/5.8 forum.

If you decide to do it

I think I was the last person to bring up the subject over there at CVN, as I wanted to do this too. Problems with proposed swap:
1. Exhaust, namely what to use for headers...I had some fox body swap units that worked rather well in a engineless guinea pig car
2. AOD....you will need to get an AOD out of an 89-up Ford, something factory heavy-duty, and rebuild/modify the hell out of it, and then get a JW pro-bell adapter bellhousing
3. front accessory drive
4. motor mounts....I had some truck units that were looking promising
5. hood clearance
6. radiator: very little clearance in front of the water pump
7. Rear end: needs a beefed up limited slip and some traction help

After alooking at these mods...I would instead build a 393 stroker out of a 351w with AFR 185's...
