I would say either you have a bad rubber seal around the door and rain water is getting in or the more obvious is a leaking heater core mounted under the dash on the passenger side

Thanks for the info, Ceaser. I have an identical CV and identical problem. My carpet will get wet when it rains even while the car is parked. I once suspected the heater core, but I never get any wetness during dry weather. |

HI
I have been tracking down my water leak.. Water comes in from under the carpet when it rains.. suggestion I have received...
The Vent under the cowl is blocked or the seal has gone bad.
The heater core seal has failed...
I do get a good amount of water.. I have owned the car for about three months. From what I can tell, the water leak has been occurring for a while.. Luckly,, No rust has formed..
I will post as soon as the problem is corrected..
I also had water in the truck.... One of the "wing nut" which hold the tail light housing had a dry rotted washer.. I removed the assembly and used caulk to correct. So fare so good..
The water runs doen the trunk channel.. Some water goes over lite, some falls behind..

I have the same problem in a 1992 Grand Marquis, but mine will leak in from a heavy rain storm while sitting in the driveway.
So I guess that leaves out the heater core.
Has anyone solved this problem?

No, but I paid the dealer $250 to do it. I didn't know water could leak in up front and travel under the rubber floor. It was $250 to fix but receipt is too cryptic, the dealer used a subcontractor, and I can't find out exactly what the subcontractor sealed.
I'm now trying to decide whether I'm going to get rusted out floorpans if I don't pull out seats, carpet, and underlayment to get all of the moisture out.
Search CrownVic.net 4..6 tech archive as well as active forums for wet carpet, water leak, etc.
Here are a couple of interesting threads/excerpts:

Mike,
My back seat was filling up with water just like yours. The front mats were dry because the water travelled under the rubber underlay. I couldn't believe water could get from the front to the back like it did, but that's where it came from! Capilliary action draws the water to the back.
The seals for the plenum/firewall dry out so when it rains, the water falls through the leaf screen into the air plenum, then through the firewall into the car. First check the seal for the leaf screen. Search the forum for other fixes. Lots there!

I just had a water leak fixed in my '96 Crown Vic PI. I was having a similar problem with water on the passenger side floorboard. I tore out the carpet in search of the source and found that the water was coming from up under the dash. Not wanting to remove the dash myself to find the leak, I took the car to the local Ford dealeship. They found that the water was leaking in around the heater box. Total cost to repair: $250.00.
Also if your vehicle is an ex-police car, pull back the carpet from the firewall on the passenger side. You may see two holes in the firewall where wiring for the police emergency equipment came through from the engine compartment. Sometimes when they sell these vehicles and remove the wiring, they do not plug the holes and water leaks occur. I hope this helps.

After you've gone through all the good suggestions above (which I did too at one point in time recently), one of the other fellows on the forum here ([email protected]), pointed out something I didn't even know existed, and it did the trick for me - after spending months on end trying to find the rain leak.
If you pull back the plastic inner fender well on the right hand side of the car (very easy), you will find a rubber "flap" valve in the firewall of the car - that is the outer firewall. There are actually two firewalls, inner and outer, and they have an airspace between them. This rubber flap valve bridges the two firewalls, and the seal between them, foam rubber (thanks Ford!), has a tendency to deteriorate.
When the seal deteriorates, it allows water running down between the two firewalls, from the cowl, during rain, to "wick" around to the front of the flap valve and seep into the inside, where it settles behind the rug in the right footwell area.
All you need is is some (black) RTC carefully applied around the foam seal-to-flap valve interface.
I haven't had a drop of water since!!

I found the source of the leak on my '93 Crown Vic. It is from the drain on the fresh air intake under the grill just in front of the windshield on the right side of the car. There is a double rubber flap on the forward side of the basin where the fresh air gate opens and shuts. This drain does not have any hose routing the drain water farther down, so it spills out just above a couple of wires and bolts that come through the fire wall. Like one writer said, there may also be a failed seal right there. In very heavy rain the basin could also fill up to the point that water comes through the fresh air gate as well. The basin is open to the atmosphere through the grill. Another problem was that the seal around the fresh air screen was not complete so water that was flowing across could flow right into the fresh air basin. The water comes down the cabin side of the fire wall under the carpet. While there is a depression in the floor for the front seat, the water wicks through the padding to the back seat floor, the lowest point, and collects.
My solution was to caulk the drain in front of the fire wall (behind the plastic fender shroud) heavily all around the drain and the wires that go through the fire wall. I also closed off that portion of the grill that is directly above the fresh air basin so water cannot fall directly from the sky into the basin. There is plenty of room for air to flow from other openings in the grill. I also completed the gasket on the fresh air screen so water flowing off to the side (what it is supposed to do after it comes in through the grill) will not fall into the basin.
The biggest problem (other than finding the leak -- the sympoms showed up on the right rear floor) was getting the padding under the carpet dry. The carpet itself does not breath well. Though the carpet was only damp, when I pulled up there was an inch of water in the depression in the floor. I've had the carpet propped up for two days with a fan blowing and I can still squeeze water from the padding. |
