I'm installing a kill switch. I took off the ignition casing under the steering wheel and I see 5 colored wires running away from the ignition(white, orange/white, black, purple and blue).

There is one thick black/purple wire running to the ignition and another black wire running to the ignition too.

Which wire do I cut to connect the kill switch? I just want to disable the starter wire only.

It's just a SUPER-DUTY Mustang GT Sedan. 198K miles and still rolling HARD.

1997 Crown Victoria P71 SVT *** ex-US Marshall service (the CAR)
STOCK?? I bet it was modified.

13.26 @ 107.24 MPH 1/4 mi w/ me, tools, & full tank of 93 octane

I added CAI, NICHE 19 X 8.5 " wheels with 245/45ZR 19 rubbers, and completely rebuilt the front end with poly bushings, Kooks headers, 2 1/4inch exhaust, TCI 2200-2400 rpm Stall converter

.PLANS:: engine upgrade, 5.4L 2v stroker, rebuild interior in leather w/ buckets, thinking about turbos

Thanks man. Great information!

I identified the starter wire white/pink on the wiring diagram but don't see it under the harness in my car. The wire black/purple is not even listed and that's the wire the runs to the ignition. But I don't want to take any chances by cutting the wrong wire. I will take it to the Ford Dealer.

Skip the wire colors and find the start wire with a test light. Back-probe the wires at the ignition switch connector: the one you want is dead in OFF, dead in RUN, and lights only while you hold the key in START. Put your switch in series with that wire and it will stop cranking without affecting anything else.

On these cars, the start signal from the switch also passes through the transmission range sensor (that is why it only cranks in Park or Neutral) on its way to the starter relay, so interrupting it anywhere along that path works.

Use a switch rated comfortably above what that circuit carries, and solder and heat shrink the splices. A loose connection in the start circuit gives you an intermittent no crank that is miserable to chase later.

Our 1998 to 2011 Crown Victoria wiring page has a 1999 Crown Victoria starting circuit diagram that traces the circuit from the battery junction box through the starter relay. It is a year off from yours, so use it to follow the circuit and the test light to confirm the wire:
