I am overhauling this 5.8L engine and was looking at my fairly worn-looking camshaft. i'm perplexed by some measurements.
First off, the bearing journals, measured and should-be's:
1. 2.018 (2.0215) off by .003
2. 2.034 (2.0365) off by .002
3. 2.050 (2.0515) off by .001
4. 2.065 (2.0665) off by .002
5. 2.082 (2.0815) off by .001
unbelievable, right? Okay, on to the lobes:
I measured each of the lobes' maximum size and min size, from left to right, over the camshaft... The numbers seem to vary a lot, and don't match the book's stated lift for intake and exhaust...
Anyhow, here's the measured lift (max - min) and the should-be's
Intake 1: .260 (.27
Intake 2: .261
Intake 3: .265
Intake 4: .263
Intake 5: .265
Intake 6: .264
Intake 7: .264
Intake 8: .264
Exhaust 1: .282 (.283)
Exhaust 2: .280
Exhaust 3: .279
Exhaust 4: .278
Exhaust 5: .281
Exhaust 6: .277
Exhaust 7: .282
Exhaust 8: .283
Seems like my intake's max lift loss is about .018, and is stated to be 0.005. My exhaust's lift is supposed to be .283, and my max delta is .005, so those seem good.
Mr Haynes says that for a Lightning, the max lift is closer to the #'s I'm seeing: .260, or even the 1997 engine's #'s match mine closer: 0.263. I'm thinking whoever had the engine before me might have put a different crankshaft on it?
How do I tell which engine a crankshaft came from? Mine has TE stamped into it, but nothing else.
