I have a 67 fairlane500 ranchero with a 289 and a C4 auto , shifts good from 1st to 2nd but when i shift to drive it stays in 2nd . any suggestions

not a final answer of course but it appears that you will/could use
an inspection by " tranny " service company.

You could try minor items like fluid check...!
Fluid flush and filter change...
linkage and shifter mobility...not sticking in parts of shift options...

Give these a look.

IT was a broken vacuum line at the trans seems to shift good now ,,, but now how about helping me with why does it surge @idle and under load
