I have a 1996 EB with the 351W MAF and have decided to rebuild what I have rather than get a 'crate' engine.

I want a truck that is going to be decent on MPG and be able to get a 25' open fisherman up and out of the water.

Things I am not sure on:

Heads: AFR185's, Performer, Dart, Trick Flow Specialites, etc...some of these appear drag race heads though

Cam: E303 or the X303 have been recommended with the E303 supposedly a more off-idle cam (good for me)

Intake Manfold: I can't find any 351W style...any ideas?

Throttle Body/MAF: I was told to up my injectors to 24lb/hr and go with a ~77mm throttle with a ~80mm MAF unit for good performance.

Exhaust: I have the motorsports shortties and was looking into the Gibson or Bassani exhaust based on good recommendations from the forums....anyone know if these breathe enough for a stroker?

I am hoping to keep my MPG around the same and pick up as close to 400hp/450tq as I can get.

I will be running around a 32" tire and 3.55 LSD gears.

Thanks

Chris

A solid rebuild with good machine work, quality replacement parts, a mild cam and extra care in fitting everything combined with a little time spent cleaning up the heads or replacing them if you just must to feel better would give a good base for a tow vehicle, if you want big numbers then maybe a Procharger system. Looking at the 400/450 values you want makes me think you should plan on some drivetrain upgrades as well since you'll be tearing up pretty much everything behind the engine. Also the cooling system will not be up to the task so look at that upgrade to keep the mega motor running. As for the exhaust if you are realisticly wanting to make 400hp you will be needing a properly designed custom exhaust with a balance tube and a pair of high flow cats or maybe a well done single outlet system of about 3" all the way back from where the pipes join. Building a solid tow vehicle doesn't take a stroker motor with mega $$$ in every trinket on the shelf. Build a solid and reliable engine for the Bronco and then get a 5.0 Mustang for the hot rod.

The cooling system should be fine, a 393W is not going crazy on overboring...which is usually what causes overheating.

We have had Mustangs 1965, 1966 and 1988 GT's. (306HP+, 306HP+, ?hp, whatever all the motorsports gave it..it came already put together.)

The thing is not just towing but a good commuter truck is wanted so it's hard to figure out.

I got a bunch of ideas going now.

Edelbrok Truck EFI

Edelbrock or BBK 61mm dual TB's

AFR 185's

E or X303 cam ???

Bassani Y pipe with Cats paired to either the Bassani or Gibson cat back

Some kind of cold air whether its insulating the stock intake + K&N or a FIPK

Possibly an electric fan(s)

then possibly 24lb/hr injectors if needed and a larger MAF if needed.

Still looking at the best 393W kit or just going with a 351W and a .030 overbore and calling it a day....if the difference of the 393W to 351 is less or equal to a grand it's a done deal...should be worth at least 40 more HP

A. Heads could be lowered to AFR165's, Performer's or Dart OK too - Trick Flow is more like AFR185's not needed.

Cam: E303 or the X303 have been recommended with the E303 supposedly a more off-idle cam (good for me)

A. E303 is ok - more of a NOS cam though, More like a B303 or F303 for pulling.

Intake Manfold: I can't find any 351W style...any ideas?

A. Edelbrock has some, also CHP if you are going EFI

Throttle Body/MAF: I was told to up my injectors to 24lb/hr and go with a ~77mm throttle with a ~80mm MAF unit for good performance.

A. If you go with the higher performance parts above, Yes - You will have to change somethings in the computer too then.

Exhaust: I have the motorsports shortties and was looking into the Gibson or Bassani exhaust based on good recommendations from the forums....anyone know if these breathe enough for a stroker?

A. Yep they will, I got Kooks Long Tube.

I am hoping to keep my MPG around the same and pick up as close to 400hp/450tq as I can get.

A. You may lose a little MPG but you will increase your HP & Turq. a lot.

I will be running around a 32" tire and 3.55 LSD gears.

Thanks
