Exhaust options

I'm a big fan of direct fit systems. The only one I can find is on Summit for $1144. Is there something cheaper out there I'm missing? I'd just like something other than stock since exhaust work is already needed. The previous owner left it at 2 Cherry bombs underneath the car and that's not going to fly in my area.

What are you looking for?
The only system including headers and full cat-back is made by Stainless Works, and it's expensive.
You can use other headers on pre-2003, or if you are just looking for a cat-back, you'll do better having an exhaust shop do it since there is no other kit.

Okay good to know. I'm having the shop that fixed the trans look into the cost of just re-finishing the stock exhaust. I have no interest in headers, it's a decent car but not worth that at all.
Disappointing that the only kit out there for these is top dollar. You'd think for a big American cruiser with a V8 there would be a lot more cheaper 'kits'. I put dual exhaust on a Dakota for about $250.

Is there some reason this won't fit a 2001? A review says it was installed on a 2004. From all the diagrams I saw, it seems Ford changed the exhaust layout for the 2003 but isn't the car essentially the same? Or did something in the rear prevent the older exhaust style from working?

I'm trying to find the stock parts as well and every parts site seems to confuse the 03 mufflers with mine. Mine looks like I could just buy a muffler for one side and flip it around to get the other. 03 and up has a curved out-pipe on just one muffler and I don't get why. all that did was shorten the tail pipe but in the end you have the same assembly from what I see.

I'm in TX and I'll be doing my exhaust in near future. A good exhaust shop in town will do a cat back dual for about $500. Im currently running single tail out.

So after finding still 0 direct-fit aftermarket solutions, I'll be ordering the H pipe back stock kit for $300. Since it's a kit I'm just doing it myself . My only concern was ordering all the parts on line and having it not fit. This car suddenly became a daily driver as we just lost a Volvo to a deer, so the Cherry bombs have to go or my ears may start bleeding.

I'd really like something mild, just something to remind of the V8 factor after I eliminate all the pulley whine that comes with every 4.6 but with the design of the mufflers it doesn't seem anything could just swap in down there.

The hangers are different 2003+, the suspension is different 2003+ and most likely the pre-2003 suspension would get in the way. The shocks 2002- were inside the frame in the rear and would most likely get in the way of the 2003+ exhaust design.
