Okay so I need some help here. Let me start off my acknowledging that yes I was a moron and drove on the car with the P0306 code and random misfire and I understand that is why I am writing this today. On March 17th 2018, my 2003 civilian crown vic started shuddering when I accelerated heavily. Didn’t think anything of it until about 5 days later when is threw a CEL. again, the problem was still intermittent when I first got the CEL. On Thursday March 22, I had autozone read the code and was informed that I had a misfire in cylinder 6. They recommended replacing spark plugs and coils. The misfire started getting worse on Saturday the 24th. It became for frequent and more regular. I only drive the car on the weekends and usually about 10 miles so I figured it would be fine until this weekend when I had a chance to replace the coils and spark plugs. Well, last night I heard a hissing sound that stopped and about 5 miles later I started hearing a metallic pinging sound that is 100% consistent. It does not speed up when I accelerate. The car is lagging horribly and it’s shaking so bad it feels like the motor wants to come out of the car. Now back on the 2nd of March I had an oil change done and the serpentine belt and fuel filter was also changed by Ford. What the hell did I do to my car?? If I understand the other postings correctly, a misfire in cylinder 6 doesn’t digress I to complete engine failure in under three weeks averaging 40 MPH over 10 miles? Any help is appreciated. |

Hey Sig357, I appreciate everything. I was asking that in a serious manner. As a follow up, I looked quickly at the motor and plugs nothing glaring was visible. I bought rebuild kits for the coils and spark plugs about a week ago and they just came in yesterday. I turned the motor on yesterday to see if I could watch the motor while it made the noise I described and the noise was gone just the faint rumble of a misfire. Granted I didn’t put the car in drive and move it or anything but the noise for the moment is gone. I’ll try to remember to post an update on Saturday when I tear her down to do the coils and plugs. One other question how many miles roughly do you have on those Reilley coils? |

Hi. The sound you describe is fairly common for an ejected plug. I just had that on Cyl 4. It made the idle noise you describe but got really loud with any acceleration. Due to the coilpack and bar over that, it did not throw it beyond stripping the hole. If that has happened to you, do not do a helicoil. They are cheap temp fixes. Search up TSB 07-21-2 to see what is to be done properly per Ford. There is a kit for what they call a Lock N Stitch that is a more permanent type of fix. That kit is 1300 from Ford Rotunda but 500 on Amazon. I believe it has several uses from the kit and a special tool to do the job. |

i had the same problem. i took the valve cover off and found a cam follower laying at the bottom.
i did all that after i did a compression test on number six and it was dead. So, i removed the intake and low and behold i found a grease rag down in the cylinder making the valve stick open. after removing it from the cylinder i reinstalled the intake and the cam follower and the valve cover.
all is good now except i think torque converter is goin bad.
