'89 Crown Vic - Losing Power When Warmed Up

I have an '89 Crown Vic with:
-25,000 original miles
-5.0 liter V8

Starting this weekend I noticed that it seems to be losing power after it gets hot. I was driving in stop-go traffic for about 1/2 hour and I started noticing a burning smell...almost like a combination of burnt electronics and rubber. Then I noticed that the engine seemed to be getting weaker. I stopped at a gas station and looked at the engine. There was no smoke or leaks coming from the engine and there is no smoke coming from the exhaust. The smell seems to be coming from the front of the engine, by the power steering pump area. The belts "seemed" to be moving freely and I didn't notice that any of the accessories on the belt drive were making any abnormal noises.

The engine response feels similar to that of a vehicle with a manual transmission that is trying to take off in a high gear...stuttering almost. Once the RPM's get up it smooths out and runs alright. After I let it sit and cool it ran better but not perfect.

Do you have any ideas as to what could be causing this? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I cannot believe how few miles that Vic has.

As I was reading your post, I thought of the accessory belts or the pulleys.

Yeah, I bought the car a few months ago from my girlfriend's Grandma. It hasn't been used much in the last few years, but it is SOOO clean! I wanted to post on the 'CrownVic.net' page but I am waiting for the Admin to validate my account creation.

I am taking it to a mechanic tomorrow, hopefully it won't be anything major. I would like to have a better idea of what to tell the mechanic and if someone here thought that they had an idea I would try to fix it myself if it is easy enough.

Looking through posts on 'CrownVic.net' I found one with a similar sounding problem that may have to do with a stuck "EGR" valve.

What a find! That is one of those car tales that always sounds too good to be true.

As a follow-up, I fixed the problems that I spoke of in my original post. I am not sure which of the following things did the trick, but here is what I changed:

-New fuel filter
-New plugs
-New wires
-New cap and rotor

Yep sounds like my sisters car, did the samething one day.

Ok so I changed all the things you would for tuneup, Plugs & Wires, Rotor & Cap, Fuel Filter, Checked for Vacuum Leak - No Leaks, Check the Compression of the motor - Was ok.

Everything went fine, it was run fine again, Just something was not right with it, gut talking to me.

About a week or so later, it started again.

So I changed the O2 Sensors, this seemed to work.

Sometime went by (another week or two), it started again.

Well, I just taken the motor out and installed a brand new rebuild, it was still doing the samething and that odor, so it was not the motor.

What was happen was I would get all types of codes out of the cumputer, it would start running like it need a tune up, and that odor would show up again, when you drive - it would start bucking like it was not getting fuel.

From what I was told by so many that have a 89, the samething started to happen to them.

So I got a Carbuator, got all the Emission gone, and that thing flys now.

Something in the Emissions - a Sensor was bad is what I figured and then the Computer gave you two sometimes 4 or 5 codes after resetting it, do not know what the Electrical & Rubber odor came from though ( it was cheaper to just change to a Carbuator in the end).
