Charles;
from Baumann;
"...If the shifter has a P-R-N-OD-D-1 pattern, the transmission must be an AOD (applicable to 1980-1993 vehicles).
If a 1989-1993 truck has an Overdrive Cancel Switch and a P-R-N-OD-2-1 shifter pattern, then it is equipped with an E4OD transmission. With the possible exception of some 4R70W equipped 1993 E-150 vans with 5.0L SFI engines (The existence of a 1993 4R70W van is unsubstantiated). "
be well!

C4 & C6, Came in 3 speeds with no overdrive.
AOD was a 4 Speed & had Overdrive, they was a 3 speed with overdrive as the 4 speed.
E40D was a 4 Speed with Overdrive, the OD was the 4th speed and you could push a button to lock out the overdrive or push it again to have it.
I have never seen a C6 with a Overdrive ever.
You should have, (P, R, N, D, 2, 1 ) for a C6 or C4.
There was (P, R, N, D, 2, 1) & the OD was Automatic or just there, No OD signs any where (you could not lock out the OD on these units).
There was (P, R, N, D, 2, 1 + you had the push button on the dash to lock out or have the OD) with E4OD's only.

John I went to latham ford and they said in 88 you had a c6 or the aod 4 speed now the fact that I can lock out the od and that I only have 3 speeds they said that it meant that I have the c6 maybe they turned the third speed into a overdrive? |

I have the C-6 in both of my Broncos. The code on the door jamb says "Type K" for this unit. It does NOT have overdrive, so you must have the AOD/AOT tranny if yours has OD. A surefire way to tell is to look under the truck, at the pan. The rear edge of the pan on the C-6 is "S-shaped" or has a 90-degree bend. The pan for the AOD is nearly square. |

AS mentioned before, the overdrive on the AOD is the 4th gear/speed, even if you only see 3 speeds. No C-6 was offered with OD. If you need the number of a good transmission shop, call Griggs, (979)245-4733. He'll tell you the same thing. Have you checked the pan shape? |
