My 95 Crown Vic 4.6 has a problem. I believe that the oil cooler cracked internally and let water into the crankcase which resulted in the engine overheating and possibly cracked something. After changing the oil and letting it run for 10 mins I had about four quarts of water in the crankcase. Turned it off and water continued to inter the crankcase with a estimated seven quarts (3 - 4") up past the full mark. A mechanic at our sheriffs garage said that these motors were bad about that and with that amount of water the block or heads were shot and that new motor was the cheapest fix. Does everyone agree with that?

If that is the answer I am having trouble finding a suitable donor. The pasenger car and interceptor share the same engine but the 95 has to use a 95 according to the interchange. I have found a low milage 93 and 96. I am getting various answers as to if it will interchange or what I can change to make it work. The 96 is out of a Mercury Marquis and the 93 is out of a totalled Police Cruiser. I need to know what are the differences and what I can do.

Many thanks,

Charles,

As far as direct, drop in dealer style replacement, or what we call an R&R job, the information you have as the 95 being 95 specific is probably true. Net end result being a "Plug & Play" type installation. BUT on the other hand, anything is possible although prehaps not probable.

The difference between your 95 & other years may be a matter of sensors, ECM or EPROM in your ECM, or several other factors which prevent "plug & play" but are easily & inexpensively changed to make the engine, vehicle, and operating system compliant & compatable.

I stick MAFS, Roller Engine 5.0Ls in 80's T-Birds all the time. Nothing is compatable or compliant between the two. Never the less I can integrate systems, or retro systems, or make stand alone segments of systems to get 'em 2 run well. 80s T-birds had primitive operating system technology.
They were speed density, bank fired, Central EFI systems. If one looks in OEM manuals & service information a 90's 5.0L Mass Air will not work in a 85 T-Bird, but with upgrade of car, or retrofitting of system they work great. So "Can't & Won't" don't mean much if you're willing to think in tems of WILL AND CAN . . . .

I do not care for Modular Engines for a number of reasons I will not get into. My point is I do not have the specific information about your vehicle or engine to describe what you need to do. I will say there are ways to get around the perceived "road block" you are against. It is a matter of you getting informed/ educated, or finding someone there who already is & use their help.

I promise you if you sell or trade the car, somebody will do excatly what I am telling you to do. It happens all the time, every day, all over the country.

Besides my Beloved "Birds", My 65 F100 has 78 460 engine, 79 F150 Frame, I'm fitting mass air tuned port, EFI, on an engine that came with a carburetor, and so on and so on. What matters to me is cost effectiveness. If my fiscal criteria are met I go for it if not, it's cut bait & run.

Thanks I am making progress and will update when we work it out. I don't think it will be too difficult and it looks like I'm going withthe 93 4.6.

I know that the Transmission fluid gets cooled though the radiator but you are talking about getting motor oil or water in the motor oil, that is a sign of a cracked block or blown head gaskets, in which case you will need to rebuild the motor or get another block and rebuild motor or get another motor (used or new) and replace (R&R).

If it was me, I would look for a (Donor Vehicle) newer than 95 with a 4.6L in it & hit in the rearend not the front of the car at a juck yard.
Then I would swap all the need parts from one to the other.
Parts off the top of my head would be - Oil pan, all Sensors, Intake maybe.

Basically this would be like a R&R just may need to get something (Nuts & Bolts, some gaskets), Done.

Perhaps you should pull the motor out and find out EXACTLY what is wrong with it. It may be useable still. Of course a police motor would be cool.
