I need a little help. I am looking at a 61 Ford which appears to be, and is represented as a 4 speed car. To now, my understanding has been Ford didn't introduce a 4 speed manual until 1962 with the 406. However, it is possible there may have been some very late production cars with 4 speeds. Before I get more serious about this, I need to either confirm my thinking that they didn't put 4 speeds in this car from the factory or follow up real tight to determine build date and 4 speed availability. Thanks for your response.

The only way a 4/S (BW T-10) was available in 1961 was in a Z-Code (390 HI-PO) as a dealer installed option. It was placed into the trunk at assembly and the dealer was paid to install it. Same for the 390/401HP 3x2. The car came delivered as a 390/375HP (4V) and the tri-power was placed into the trunk at assembly for dealer installation.

The 4/S became a normal option in 1962.
