I'm currently changing the engine in my grand marquis to a '71 429 cobra jet as I am buying the engine for $100 can. with the original long tail stock tranny.(cheaper than fixing the rotted oil pan and bad oil pump and dirty spark plugs/ignition system) I'm already aware of the clearance problems and I've already concluded that the custom body job I'm doing will compensate nicely for the clearance problems. (hood scoop over breather, extended hood towards front for clearance for rad to be moved forward) But, what I want to know is, without changing the original C-6 on the 429 will I be able to use the 5.0L's motor mounts in the grand marquis? What other parts, etc. might I have to change/alter for the 429 to fit? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Short answer on the mounts: not as a straight bolt-in. The 429 is a 385-series big block with its own mount pads, and the 5.0's engine-side brackets don't bolt to it. Ford took the 429/460 out of its cars after 1978, so the 1979 and later Panther cars (your Grand Marquis included) never got a factory big-block mount. People who have put a 429 or 460 into a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis have worked it out themselves. One used the plates sold for 460 swaps into Fox Mustangs, drilled and tapped so the 302 brackets bolt on, so some of your 5.0 mount parts may still be usable that way. Others pieced mounts together from factory brackets. One Panther builder says there has never been a bolt-in big-block kit for these cars, so plan on some fabrication.

The other things you'll run into, roughly in the order they bite:

1. Transmission mount and driveshaft. Your '90 came with the AOD. With the 429 and C6 in place, the transmission mount won't land where the AOD's did, so expect to move or build the mount and have the driveshaft made to the new length after the engine is set.

2. Fuel system. The 5.0 is fuel injected, and the '71 Cobra Jet came with a Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel. The fuel supply has to be redone for a carb instead of the injection system.

3. Wiring. The EEC-IV computer and the injection harness come out. You still need to keep the starter, charging and gauge circuits working, and give the 429's distributor its own ignition feed.

4. Oil pan. Panther owners suggest the Ford Racing pan made for 460 swaps into Fox Mustangs, or a 460 truck pan. Check this before the engine goes in for good.

5. Exhaust. Stock-style manifolds and headers made for other cars may not clear. One Panther owner suggests Sanderson's shorty headers should fit these cars.

6. Clearance. Besides the hood, check the wiper box (cowl) and the heater box at the back of the engine. You've already planned the hood scoop and moving the radiator forward, which takes care of the front.

Mock it up with the engine and C6 bolted together on a hoist before you cut or weld anything, so the mounts and the trans mount are built around where the drivetrain really sits.
