I am trying to decide which engine to consider for an Excursion Limited. I tow a 29' TT 7000lbs and 5 children's stuff about 6 times a year. All the other time is a grocery getter and people mover. I currently run a 1998 Expedition 5.4L Eddie Bower 4x4 and am accustomed to the 12.9 miles per gallon, not happy about it, but when you got this many kids, you have to own a vehicle that seats as many as a school bus. I was hoping for a few more miles to the gallon. What kind of mileage is everyone getting on the V10 and 7.3L ? My wife drives this vehicle most often and puts about 10K miles per year. I am concerned about the carbon build up in the diesel considering we live in a small town without an expressway to blow out the carbon exhaust on a regular basis. I like the mileage reports on the diesel better than the Gas V10. I have owned a Turbo Diesel previously; however, a 4cyl VW Jetta and 15 years ago. I know there have been major improvements in the diesel engine technology in 15 year, so I am at a disatvantage in the marketplace when trying to make this decision. I surely don't want to rely on a car salesman to tell me the pro's and con's (Sorry Car Salesman, no offense)! Please offer any good or bad information you can on the pro's and con's.
