Well, here it goes. I am new here, so hello everyone. I am a long time Ford owner my current vehicle is a 1970 Torino GT with a 351C 4V. Anyway, I am looking at a 1980 F-150 with the straight six in it. My question's are what kind of tranny does it have, it's a manual, and is it a good tranny for possible upgrade to V-8? What kind of transfer case does it have, appears to be manual hubs, and is it any good?
Best i can figure from the internet is it might have a NV450???? tranny, 208 transfer case and I am pretty sure a 9 inch rearend. I see a lot of potential (especially at $1200 or less). Should I wait and try to find a straight axle earlier model? Thanks.

It sounds like a good truck. They do have the TTB and not the straight axle but it's still a strong axle. The rears on that year was the 9". I think you are right about the t-case being a NP208 but I don't know about the tranny. Maybe a NP T-14 or 435. The 6cyl engines were quite good engines so wouldn't worry about that unless you hear some strange noises. If everything is in working order and good condition I say go for it. I am sure the tranny can handle a V8 if you wanted one but that will not give much more power than the current V6. Maybe 20-30hp. Sounds like a deal at $1200.

Thanks for the input. From what I have been told it has a four speed with granny low, which from the info I could get suggest a T-18 or NP435. However, it appears that the NP435 made it into these vehicles from 1965-1979. It sounds like both are good trannys with the NP435 being slightly better with a lower gear ratio than the T-18. As far as the straight six, are these good motors? I live in the desert and do a little bit of offroad driving on smooth dirt roads as well as a little bit of rock crawling. I am ass-u-meing that the straight six has decent torque and with the granny gear should have no problem with rocks or inclines. Are there any performance upgrades I can do to this engine i.e. carb, intake, cams, etc....? And where can I locate these parts. I can't find them in my Jeg's catalog can I?

Well, I bought the truck!!!! I got it for $1000 and the gentlemen offered to pay any back taxes on it, but there should'nt be any cause it was on planned non-op for the last three years. So, I will be cleaning it out and checking various electrical components to chase down the gremlin that put her up for three years. I think it may be as simple as a coil . It has the 300ci strait six, T-18 tranny, NP208 transfer case, ford 9 inch rear, and D44TTB up front. I will keep ya'll up to date as I go through the truck and hopefully start some projects like a strait six build up, front axle conversion, rear axle swap and other stuff. Thanks for the help and I will probably be back with many questions in the future.
