2001 7.3l CPS like failure

Ok, I have not posted in a LONG time, and that is because my baby has been running beautifully. Now, as I was driving down the freeway, it stalled and would not start back up. Had it towed to the dealership, and $500+ later, they said it was a loose wiring to the computer. Drove another day, and it stalled again. This time it restarted, and I took it back to Ford. After a full day of diagnosis, they said it was the ICP sensor, and needed oil change?? Anyway, they quoted $450, and I told them I wanted my car back, as they had misdiagnosed it the first time. I went ahead and changed the ICP by myself with a dealer part, and now today, it stalled again twice! It restarted both times, and now I have it back home. No codes, or check engine light. Can enyone help out there?

Stalling with no codes that restarts after a while is the textbook behavior of a failing camshaft position sensor on the 7.3. The computer needs that signal to time the injectors, and when it drops out, the engine just quits, often without setting a code.

The tell: watch the tachometer while it is cranking after a stall. With a dead cam sensor the tach needle stays flat at zero while the engine turns over, because the tach takes its signal from the same sensor. If the tach moves while cranking, the sensor is at least working at that moment.

If you replace it, use a Motorcraft or International sensor rather than a generic one, since cheap sensors have a poor record on this engine. If a new sensor does not cure it, the harness connectors under the valve covers (they feed the injectors and glow plugs) are a known source of stalling and miss, and worth inspecting.
