Radio Problems

I just recently bought an 01 P71 CV and when I was driving it home I was messing with the radio and found out that the front door speakers dont work. I figured that the state troopers probably disconnected the front ones so they could still listen to the radio without drowning out their cb radios. I checked in the door panels and they are hooked up and they are also hooked up in back of the radio. I was just wonderin if anyone else has had this problem and if it is the speakers or the radio is blown. Any help would be appreciated because i am stumped.

It is possible that 1) the radio is dead, 2) the wires have been cut, or 3) the speakers are dead.

First, you have radio playing to the rear speakers. So either half the radio is bad or just no signal to the front speakers. Try hooking a KNOWN GOOD speaker to test the connection at each of the front speakers. Disconnect the speaker wires from the door speakers, and make a temporary hookup to the KNOW GOOD speaker while the radio is on. It is important to make sure the radio is on (YES, we all do dumb things sometimes.) This will check to see if you do have power to the speakers.

If nothing, try to tap into the wires on the back of the radio (you need a schematic for this one) to get the + and - for one of the door speakers, and use this new wire to try the KNOWN GOOD speaker to work. If nothing, then the radio is the problem.

It is possible that the speaker wires were cut between the radio and the speakers, in which case you will need to rewire the front speakers.

Unless you really want the factory radio left in, I would replace it and put it up for safe keeping. I removed my factory radio to keep for later and bought a good radio from Crutchfield for everyday. It is nothing to remove the new radio, frame, and wiring adapter from the car, and return it to OEM. (Well, almost nothing. [img] It does take a while to remove the frame!)

Thanks for the help. Ill have to check the wiring and the speakers out because I put in a radio that I just had lying around right after I posted this and the fronts still don't work. I'll be able to pull a wiring diagram from school on monday since I'm going for auto tech and they have Motor Alldata and it is free for me. Just one of the many benefits I get for still being in school.

I looked up the diagram and there is a connector under the instrument panel somewhere only on the p71 models. I took the panel off but I couldnt find the connector. I did find under the kick panel and it looks like its plugged in. I the used my meter to see if there was power going to it and there was so I am thinking the speakers are blown but they dont look bad and don't smell like the coils are burnt so i guess ill have to see if it is the speakers.

As silly and elemntary as this sounds, if i was a police officer and needed the front speakers to not produce sound so as to not drown out my CB radio, I would simply set the fader to the rear speakers and wouldne't reallly mess with removing the door panel and disconnecting the wires.
