I HAVE A 1998 CROWN VIC. THE ENGINE WAS MAKING A LOUD KNOCKING, SO I PULLED THE ENGINE AND FOUND THAT IT HAD SPUN ONE OF THE BEARINGS ON THE CONNECTING ROD CAP.I FOUND THE BEARING IN THE OIL PAN, AND NOTICED ONE OF THE CONNECTING RODS WAS VERY LOOSE, WHICH LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THAT WAS THE NOISE I WAS HEARING. OIL PRESSURE WAS EXCELLANT, AND IT DID ACT LIKE IT WAS MISFIRING, BUT I SEEN ONE OF THE INJECTORS LOOKED CLOOGED. I WAS CURIOUS TO KNOW IF I CAN REPLACE THE BEARINGS WITH NEW ONES, AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER OR IS IT WORTH THE EFFORT? OR SHOULD I JUST GO WITH ANOTHER ENGINE? MY BUDGET IS REALLY TIGHT, SO I NEED SOME REALLY GOOD ADVICE HERE. THE CAR RAN BEFORE I TOOK IT APART, SO I BELIEVE THE REST OF THE ENGINE IS OKEY. CAR HAS 140000 ON IT. I CAN BUY A USED ENGINE FOR ABOUT 350, 400. IT ALSO SAYS THAT I HAVE TO REPLACE THE CONNECTING ROD BOLTS IF I REPLACE THE BEARINGS? IS THIS TRUE?

Myself, I would get the used engine and put it in the car. Then you got transportation.

And then REBUILD the "spun" engine. You will have all sorts of metal flakes through out that engine. It will need a thorough washing out to get rid of the metal.

Just replacing the bearings sounds easy enough, but what about the metal left in the oiling system? If you don't flush it all out, it will eat up the new bearings. So it would be better to rebuilt it.
