AOD swaps....

I have come to the final conclusion that my AOD overdrive is out for good...slips every time. I have changed the fluid-N-filter (F-n-F) w/Rislone transmission anti-slip product...but it's not 'catching the overdrive'...

I have been seeking some rebuilds & shifts kits enhancements to 'standard' FORD AOD transmissions. So the question is....what Ford vehicles, engines & years will fit/work w/my 1991 Lincoln Town Car 4.6 L AOD....?

I have been reading that most of the AOD transmission from about 1980 thru 1993 are 'simpatico'... So will ALL of these AOD transmissions be simple & clean 'swaps'....??? What minor differences will I encounter...?

I have found a AOD transmission from a 1990 Mustang GT that has been rebuilt w/new Kevlar clutch bands & a shift kit......should this be a clean conversion....???

Should I just clean my old torque converter or seek a rebuilt/cleaned torque converter to go w/ 1990 Mustang GT AOD....?

Any other issues I should be thinking about w/this AOD 'swap'....

As long as your AOD is not electronic (AODE or 4R70W), the swap out shouldn't be a big problem, as the trans have similar dimensions (width x height x depth). It's the electrics that drive you crazy.

I personally would replace the convertor with one with a higher stall speed (Mustang GT or Cobra), or buy a hi-perf one

Thanks jdmeaux: The fit (lenght being the main concern)...from the reading I have found so far seems to indicate that some Ford models have long dimensions... while other have short dimensions...

I was pretty sure of the electronic vs non-electronic models & years as you mentioned...so I have been focused on the 'AOD's'...but concerned w/the crown vics, marquis & especially the mustangs (gt & cobra's)

So if your right on the dimensions...I'll screen by the years (1989 to 1992) in my case. I haven't yet done a visual inspection of the original AOD for it's part number. Do you have any suggestions for locating a source to use the VIN to show the engine & transmission part numbers...?
