So I need to change the whole rear diff on my 2005 cop cruiser. Looking around junkyards, I saw a 1998 Crown Vic (not the police one) and I wanted to know if I could use the rear differential assembly.

Pretty much, if it fits and the car can run again I'd be happy.

The junkyard should know whether it will fit or not. I believe it should.

I think most civilian 8.8" rear diff had 3.08 gears in it. Some cop cars had 3.27 or 3.55. Several forums talked about changing the gears in the cars (both civilian and cop cars), and if memory serves me correct, you can change up to a 3.55 WITHOUT having to reprogram (flash) the PCM.

The only thing they knew was how to give me a liability form if I injured/killed myself in the junkyard, to be honest. They didn't even know what cars they had in stock.

Still looking around though.

The thing I've been reading is that they seem to have changed where the diff attaches from pre-2003s.

I think I can get away with simply getting a new axle. I'd be able to take the axle off the 1998 junker and swap it for my bent one. If that don't work then I'd be looking for the whole diff assembly.
