I just recently got a 1995 Crown Victoria, and the headlights are low, especially the right side. I adjusted the right side as high as I could get it, and the hot spot of the low beam still hits the ground about ten feed ahead of the car. Switching on the high beam moves the hot spot about ten feet further. The headlight reflector looks like it might not be a bright as it should. Is deterioration of the headlight assemblies a problem with these cars? They are quite pricey, and I wish I could prove what the problem is before I resort to new ones. Any suggestions? Scruffybeast

It could be one of two things: headlight assembly OR mounting points.

It is possible that after an accident, particularly if it was a corner damage for the repair shop to have the mounting points of the headlight OFF just a little. (This is true especially on CVPIs used in the famous PIT MANEUVER, where a corner of the vehicle contacts the other vehicle, and damage occurs.) Correcting this is a time-consuming process of trying to get BOTH sides of the front to line up.

The second problem of a headlight assembly being twisted is rare and almost unheard of. Usually it is the mounting studs are not correct in the holes on the vehicle. And the owner tries to adjust a crooked headlight. Yes, its a pain to slowly adjust those things, but sometimes you have to move the headlight to a point where it does physically line up with the rest of the car, and look like they are falling out. But usually if you adjust the lights so they are flush with the rest of the front, and then make extremely minor adjustments to get the hot spot where it belongs.

Hi Guys. A little while back, I mentioned a headlight aim problem I was having. It was suggested that perhaps there was repaired damage to the car which threw the mounting of the headlight assembly off. If that is true, they did one heck of a job fixing it, as I can't see any evidence of it. The car is still original as much as I can see. I still suspect the reflector inside the headlight assembly, but I would think that this would dim the light rather than throw it's position off. I have found some new assemblies on Ebay at a reasonable price, but who knows where they were manufactured?
In the meantime, I run on brights most of the time, and I have only been flashed by an oncoming car once. I wonder if young drivers today even know about the practice of flashing your bright lights to tell an oncoming car that they are blinding you? Thanks for the feedback. Scruffybeast
