Sounds like a bearing or a rubbing backing plate. See if the plate is contacting anywhere (it will be shiny where it contacts). Next step would be to raise the front end onto jackstands, then rotate the tires while applying the brakes. If you get grinding from rotating the tires, bearings are shot.
