I could go through a complete breakdown of the 4.6L engine and the 4R70W 4-spd auto trans, but I won't. The modular engine is one tough little engine. It has been used with 2-valve, 3-valve, and 4-valve configurations by Ford since the 1990's, making from 195HP to 365 HP.
The 2-v version is common place. In 1999 the heads were redesigned to the PI (Performance Improved) to increase HP and torque. The 4-valve version was used in the Lincolns and Cobra Mustang. The 3-valve was primarily put into place since 2005.
A carefully built 4.6L can make up to 450 HP, as proven by Sean Hyland and others. There are a couple of books out about building the 4.6L for performance. Also, the modular engine (4.6L or 5.4L) respond great to Turbos or Superchargers.
The 4R70W, 4R75W, and 4R100W are tough transmissions. They just have to be rebuilt to replace the weak links in them from the factory. These trans were used throughout Fords line of vehicles, from the Mustang to the F350 4x4. Most transmissions outlast the engine.
What type of mileage to expect in the life of the engine? The Crown Vic was used by police and taxi companies due to its size for comfort and longevity. Seeing one with 200K Miles is not too unusual. I have seen a local cab company use a 2001 Crown Vic that has 325,000 miles on it, AND IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION. It all depends on how you take care of the parts, how often you do maintenance, and how you drive.
For more info, I would recommend www.crownvic.net and www.PantherFreedom.net as two sites to learn more.
