Check the VIN and make sure it does have "P71" in it.

The most common problems with the p71s are the intake tend to leak coolant and you have to replace the intake manifold, front end wear (bushings need to be changed), and transmission missing shifts (most have been repaired under warranty).
Since your friend was the second owner, most of these problems may have already been fixed.
All in all it is a great car without getting into the luxury packages of the Town Car. I've owned mine for 4 years and still have fun with it.
