Performance upgrades 95´ TownCar

Hey Guys,
first of all I apologize for my poor english and my very basic knowledge of the technical issues. Since I am from Germany and we have just very few such cars over here, it´s very hard to find any information or experienced shops / mechanics.
Last year I bought a 1995 Lincoln Town Car Signature, it was absolutely stock and in a quite good overall condition. Since I really like the V8-sound and you couldn´t hear any with the stock (double-)exhaust, I deleted the rear resonators and changed the stock mufflers against some "Flowmasters". That´s all up to now.
After some driving I really think this car must have some additional power, so I am looking for some upgrades. As far as I know, the 95´-engine is a so-called NON-PI 4,6 modular engine. So the best way to get more power ist to upgrade the heads, right? That means I have to install a pair of PI-heads and a PI-intake manifold... But will the PI-manifold work with my stock NON-PI upper plenum, throttle body and so on? And what about aftermarket heads? For example TrickFlow? Will they work with the stock-PI-manifold?

Welcome to the forum. I will suggest you go to www.crownvic.net (CVN) to look for information of your Town Car . The Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Town Car are all the same platform (Aero Panthers) made by Ford, except that they are from different divisions of Ford with different luxury levels, with the TC being the most luxurious.

The first level of the 4.6 L modular engine was the non-PI made from 1991 until the 1999 versions. Because people complained about the lack of power, Ford re-manufactured the engine the PI (power improved) heads with different size chambers and pistons with a different volume. Simply putting the PI heads on a non-PI engine short block will boost your compression to about 10.5:1 requiring at least 91 octane fuel.

Go really get more power from these engines you will need a "tune" like those from SCT (http://www.sctflash.com/) or Diablosports (http://www.diablosport.com/). These handheld tuners with the tunes will awaken your engine. For maximum power, torque, and mileage, you need to have a speed shop construct you a custom tune on a dyno.

CVN does have several write-ups about putting the PI heads on a non-PI engine. There are several Mustang forums that also have the similar write-ups.

Well, I am quite aware of the changes from NON-PI to PI-design. I even consider the copression ratio change positive, since it helps to build more power and the "worst" pump gas quality over here is 95oct.. It´s even no problem to get 102oct. fuel, it´s just about 15% more expensive than the "standard" 95oct.. So I think about changing the heads (I think the best is to get some TrickFlow CNC-ported ones), the cams and of course the intake manifold, since the TrickFlow-Heads require a PI-style manifold. And of course, the ECU will need a new tune. The only big question I have is: will the PI-manifold work with my stock upper plenum, sensors and whateve else bolts on it...???
