I’m replacing both rear wheel bearings and passenger side axle shaft. The passenger side seal and bearing failed… My question is: If the diff fluid leaked out months ago (I just realized that now), does anybody think that the rear end needs to be rebuilt/replaced even though the rear end doesn’t make noise? I’d like to just replace the passenger side shaft and both bearings/seals if possible. Also, if anyone has any tips/suggestions on this problem, they would be much appreciated.

If you lost all of the gear oil I would recommend at least a rebuild. Also check the bearing races and your axle shafts where they are carried by the bearings for any scoring or other damage. If there is significant damage you may need to replace the whole axle. Mine ran low not all the way dry after a poor seal job at a lube place. I had to rebuild as I had a significant amount of metal shavings in the remaining gear oil.

Is it open or trac-lok?
check the teeth very closely for wear on the spider gears, ring and pinion.
