Does anyone know the difference in performance (by personal experience)of 6.0 diesel/5-spd tran w/ 3.73 vs 4.10 gears in an 2003 F350 and pulling a load (large 5th wheel)? Think I want the 3.73 (for gas mileage), but salesman say I won't notice any difference. |

no but test drive trucks both ways perferedly more than one of each see if you can tell the diff. that motor should be able to pull stumps two at a time either way. how are you going to drive it most of the time? alot of highway? any hills? loaded most of the time? think of what real work it will do not what you would like it to do once in a blue moon, don't get Tim Allen syndrome. Any truck will respond about the same way to a gear change it might be hard to find some one with that exact combination. |

Hi Shawn, I have a 96 7.3PSD F-250 SC,LWB,4X4,auto with the 4.10:1 gears and I get about 16-18 mpg highway empty(80 mph @ 2700rpm) and about 2mpg less city. I really like the power off the line with my gears. Other people I know (some have the 6.0 )that have the 3.73 gears only get 1-2 mpg better than I do. For towing I would get the 4.10. It also depends a lot on your usage and topography.
P.S. check out www.thedieselstop.com More diesel info there than you could shake a stick at.

Hey Shawn,
We have a 35' 5th wheel and the 3.73 does a fine job with the PSD.
Ours is a 7.3 but I personally do not think the difference will matter, as the 6.0l is all good.... With the new auto tranny it should be superb! Wish I could have gotten one with our 2002 F 350! |

if it were me I would go with 4.10 if you plan to go in the mountians with a fithwhee to save the trany and brakes if the fithwheel you are talking about is a camper. but 3.73 would be ok on flat ground. but i disagree with the salesman you will notice a differance. hope this helped you
