1) Relieve the fuel pressure by removing the fuel pump relay while the engine is running.
Hint:
Remove the relay first, before starting the engine, and place it back in position just enough to make contact.
Once the engine is started, remove the relay, and the engine will stumble to a stop in ~10 seconds.
2) Turn off the key, and remove it from the ignition.
I also removed the gas cap, to further release any pressure build up.

3) Locate the fuel filter underneath the vehicle.
It will be on the driver’s side, inboard from the rear passenger door, and fitted up against the floorpan.

Saftey tip:
Do not have any ignition source nearby when you’re doing this procedure.
Make sure if you’re using a trouble light, that it’s positioned at a safe distance.
4) Remove the clips that retain the hose to the filter.
Hint:
Have a drain pan handy, as a small amount of fuel will spill out of the hoses and filter.
Gently pry down on the clips with a small screwdriver, while pinching the top of the clips with your fingers.
5) Once the clips are removed, pull the hoses off of both ends of the filter - (here’s where the drain pan will come in handy)
6) Loosen the hose clamp and the two bolts holding the fuel filter mounting bracket.
7) Slide the old filter out.

Here’s a comparison of the old and new filters and hardware.
I chose a WIX #33097 to install.
Note, the WIX filter has two of the same type of clips, while the factory filter has two different ones.
Either type will work, though I did decide to re-use the white factory clip, as it has a larger contact area.

Installation is a reversal of the removal process.
Make sure the flow direction arrow on the filter is oriented properly.
The arrow should point to the driver’s side of the car.
Clean the ends of the fuel hoses and connectors, before installing them on the new filter.
The clips will simply pop in place with a little pressure from your fingers.
Notes:
Don’t forget to re-install the fuel pump relay, and the gas cap if removed.
The first time you re-start the vehicle –
It will take a few more cranks than normal, and stumble for a second while the pressure builds back up in the system.
You can alleviate some of that by setting the key to the “run” position for 5 seconds first,
before starting the vehicle.
