Hummer Registry: Models, Builds & Photos
Hummer began as the civilian offshoot of AM General's HMMWV, the military truck that entered US Army service in 1985. AM General sold the first civilian Hummers in 1992, General Motors bought the brand name in December 1999, and GM built the H2 and H3 alongside the AM General-built H1 until the marque was shut down in 2010. GM revived the name with the GMC Hummer EV, revealed in 2020 with first deliveries in late 2021, a GMC model line rather than a standalone make.

From military contract to civilian brand
The story starts with AM General winning the HMMWV contract in March 1983 and putting the truck into Army service in 1985. Arnold Schwarzenegger famously pushed for a civilian version, and AM General obliged in 1992 with a road-legal HMMWV wearing the Hummer name (Schwarzenegger bought the first two). In December 1999 General Motors bought the brand rights. AM General kept building the original truck (renamed H1) under contract, while GM developed the H2 and H3 in-house. Rising fuel prices and GM's 2009 bankruptcy killed the brand. A sale to China's Sichuan Tengzhong fell through in February 2010, and the last Hummer, an H3T, rolled off the Shreveport line on May 24, 2010. GM revealed the GMC Hummer EV in October 2020 and delivered the first pickups in December 2021, but as a GMC model line, not a separate make.
H3 (2006-2010)
The smallest and best-selling Hummer, built in Shreveport, Louisiana on the GMT355 midsize platform shared with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. Early trucks ran the 3.5L inline-five (220 hp), bumped to a 3.7L (242 hp) for 2007. The 2008-2010 H3 Alpha got the 5.3L V8, and a crew-cab pickup version, the H3T, arrived for 2009. Despite the midsize bones it kept real off-road hardware: the Adventure package paired a 4.03:1 low-range transfer case with a rear locker, and 2009-2010 Adventure trucks added a factory front locker.
H2 (2003-2009)
Built by AM General for GM in Mishawaka, Indiana on a modified GMT800 full-size chassis. Power came from the 6.0L Vortec V8 (325 hp), replaced by the 6.2L (393 hp) and a six-speed automatic for 2008. The H2 SUT pickup variant arrived for 2005. Its 8,600 lb GVWR sat just above the 8,500 lb line that exempted it from EPA fuel-economy labeling, which made it the lightning rod of the SUV backlash era. Parts interchange with GM 2500-series trucks keeps these serviceable.
H1 (1992-2006)
The civilian HMMWV: 71.6-inch track, 16 inches of ground clearance, inboard-mounted disc brakes, geared hubs, and a central tire inflation system on many trucks. Engines ran from GM 6.2L and 6.5L diesels through the 5.7L gas V8 and a 6.5L turbodiesel. The final 2006 H1 Alpha used the 6.6L Duramax with the Allison 1000. Production ended in June 2006.
Asked all the time
What years were Hummers made?
Civilian Hummer production ran 1992 to 2010. The AM General-built H1 spanned 1992-2006, the H2 ran 2003-2009, and the H3 ran 2006-2010. GM shut the Hummer brand down in 2010 after a sale to Sichuan Tengzhong collapsed. The 2021-present Hummer EV is a GMC model, not a standalone Hummer.
What is the difference between the Hummer H1, H2, and H3?
The Hummer H1 is a civilian HMMWV built by AM General, with portal-style geared hubs and 16 inches of clearance. The Hummer H2 is a GM full-size truck (GMT800-based) with a 6.0L or 6.2L V8, assembled by AM General in Indiana. The Hummer H3 is a midsize truck on the Colorado/Canyon platform with an inline-five, or a 5.3L V8 in the H3 Alpha.
Are Hummer parts still easy to get?
For the Hummer H2 and H3, yes. Both share drivetrains and much of their hardware with mainstream GM trucks, so mechanical parts are cheap and everywhere. Hummer-specific trim and body pieces are getting scarcer. The Hummer H1 is different: AM General still supports the platform and many parts cross over to military HMMWVs, but pricing reflects the low production volume.
Why did Hummer go out of business?
Hummer sales collapsed with the 2008 fuel-price spike and recession, and General Motors put the brand up for sale during its 2009 bankruptcy restructuring. A planned sale to Chinese firm Sichuan Tengzhong failed to win approval in early 2010, so GM shut Hummer down that year.
Which Hummer is best off-road?
The Hummer H1 in stock form outperforms almost anything: 71.6-inch track, geared hubs, inboard brakes, and central tire inflation. Among the GM-era trucks, a Hummer H3 with the 4.03:1 transfer case and rear locker is more capable off-road than the heavier H2, though the H2 tows more and has the stronger V8s.
