This document details concerns and solutions regarding recreational uses on state land, including issues with trail erosion and damage from ATVs and 4x4 vehicles.
PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF QUICK POLL QUESTIONS ON CONCERNS AND SOLUTIONS ON RECREATIONAL USES ON STATE LAND IN SUTTON AREA (from 622006 scoping meeting). 7.) Do you have concerns about recreation on State land between Eska Creek and Granite Creek? 0 Trail erosion on Eska Falls trail limiting access to one of our (4x4 population) favorite trails. 0 Possible loss of access to motorized and nonmotorized. Both groups should be able to coincide on the trails. - My major concern is unrestricted use of ATVs. The Eska Creek Falls Trail is being destroyed by ATV use. The soils cannot sustain the heavy activity it receives. The damage is so bad that I don't even want to hike the trail unless use is changed. 0 The alpine area plants shrubs are being killed. ATV use is creating ruts, mud areas that were once trees and owers and a hiking trail. I Particularly Eska Trail, but in general there are many trails that are ripped up and are pure mud because of the damage. 0 Hiking ATV conicts on trails. Trail damage caused by 4wd vehicles and ATVs. Part of my life style depends on this access. Keeping trails open. . It's important to keep areas as pristine as possible. The area is being devastated! It is a crime! The 4x4s are destroying the alpine tundra, ruining the watershed and water quality, driving through the streams and creeks, leaving behind ruts and erosion along with human waste and garbage. - The jeeps and trucks should not be allowed. 0 Some of the mud holes need some hardening to help the trail. 0 Over use by large groups. - I'd like to maintain the quality of the area prevent proliferation of trash and excessive trails. I The area needs to be controlled. The ATV and 4X4 damage are destroying the area. We need designated ATV routes and areas before it's all gone. - Afraid the 4x43 and ATVs will ruin the trails and natural beauty. 0 I'm inclined to have no restrictions. - Unrestricted use, i.e. trails being made everywhere with no regard to environment. No regard for the public land. Dumping, shooting and disregard for others. The ATV and jeep use of trails has damaged them so badly that it has displaced other users, i.e. hiking, mountain biking, horseback. o The areas approaching treeline have been destroyed by wheeled vehicles (ATV and motorcycles) in the past few years. The mud holes get wider and wider and the ruts area more numerous and deeper. It has become nauseating to observe the destruction. Concerns-Solutionsdcc 1 11/6/2006
