The 1974 Mercury Cougar moved to the midsize Torino-based chassis and became a pure personal-luxury coupe, sold only as the XR-7. The change traded the car's Mustang-derived pony-car roots for a larger, plusher two-door aimed at the booming personal-luxury market of the mid-1970s.
