The 1973 Mercury Monterey was the base full-size Mercury of the 1969-1974 generation, positioned below the Marquis and given a front restyle to incorporate the federally mandated 5-mph front bumper. The standard engine was a 351 cubic inch Windsor two-barrel V8, with a 400 cubic inch two-barrel V8 standard on the Monterey Custom and optional 429 (198 hp net) and 460 cubic inch V8s. Body styles included two-door and four-door pillared hardtops, a four-door sedan, and a station wagon, all paired with a three-speed SelectShift automatic. The 429 V8 was dropped after 1973.
