So, do ya?

I'm interested in this stuff and have been doing a lot of research on it. However, I want to get some opinions of the people that actually use it on a day to day basis.

So, if anyone has experience let me know! Thanks!

Mikie

To be specific, this is a ethyl or methyl esther of whatever oil you use. They've done it with fresh vegetable oil and even used fryer oil. Supposedly you get just as much power, a hair less mileage (3% average), less emissions, it costs less and the exhaust smells like french fries.

Unfortunately, biodiesel is only available at a couple of places that are not convinent to get to around here.

What I do use though is a diesel additive when fueling up. With the additive, I can get 2 or more miles per gallon per tank.

Is that some kind of special San Francisco concoction?

What's this product called and how much does it cost?

Nope. Not just a San Francisco Concoction. ;)

Most of the time I go to Walmart to buy it. Its realtaively "cheap". Gray or White bottle in the "oil & fuel" section, labeled...... "Diesel Additive". Costco has been carrying it lately, as well. I can get 6 of the small bottles for around $20. The small bottles are each measured for a 50 gal tank, so basically one bottle per fill up.

The other product I have used is Stanindyne (sp). I had to special order that though. It comes in large containers or small containers.

The Walmart stuff in the white bottle is called "Power Service." I used it last winter and I liked it. It improved my mileage too, though I didn't measure exactly how much. I used it primariy to ensure that I never encountered fuel gelling due to cold temps.

I have read, however, that the only additive approved by Ford is Stanadyne. You might want to keep that in mind if using an additive, since it doesn't seem to take much at some Ford dealers for them to hassle you about what they will cover under the warranty. While I haven't needed much from them yet, I have to say that so far, my dealer has been good with the customer service.

Hope this helps.

I have been running my Excursion on biodiesel since I bought it a month ago. I love it! I also have an '83 Mercedes 300 DT that I have been using biodiesel in for almost two years. My emissions test showed up as 55% cleaner than with regular diesel. Biodiesel has better lubricity characteristics, too. It is MADE IN AMERICA from soybeans grown by AMERICAN farmers instead of petroleum from terrorists on the other side of the world. I buy it in Boulder, CO from boulderbiodiesel.com. It costs $2.75 per gallon, but it is worth it, considering it helps our economy. In order to protect our foreign oil supply, President Bush just asked for $87,000,000,000 to cover the war in Iraq. Add to that $4,500,000,000 a month for ongoing military operations. Our family farmers won't see a dime of that. Running your Excursion on biodiesel is a good way to prove the anti-SUV idiots wrong, too! If you don't mind waste vegetable oil, you can make biodiesel yourself for only $0.60 per gallon. The only thing you must be careful to do during the winter months is mix at least 50% petroleum diesel in with the biodiesel to keep it from jelling up when the outside temperature drops below 40 degrees. If it jelled up, you would have to wait until the outside temperature returned to above 40 degrees to start your vehicle again. Jelled fuel wouldn't damage your engine, but you might get stranded somewhere. "Winterized" biodiesel just became available, but I have no experience with it yet. For information on where to buy biodiesel, see http://www.biodiesel.org/buyingbiodiesel/guide/default.shtm If there isn't a supplier listed in your area, Email them and ask! If you are interested in making it yourself for 60 cents per gallon, see http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_mike.html
