Shoot! I went and bought the 1/2" diameter insulation. No big deal, Home Depot is close.
The insulation I found had two different measurements on it -- one for iron and one for copper. The insulation is 1/2" in diameter for copper but only 3/8" (I believe) for iron. Which measurement are you going off of?

It says 5/8" printed on the outside and confirmed the ID with the tape measure,I think I added that photo as well
1/2" will guarantee to be tight on the lines though

I was all ready to go to Home Depot, buy the supplies and do the job on Friday...when my wife tells me she and my daughter are going to Disneyland for the weekend. Oh well, I guess I'll do it after they get back, it made for a really nice weekend of just me and my 10 month old son. I'll be sure to take pics as soon as she gets back and I can get to it!!! |

Help Me!!! I have a 2001 V-10 4 x 4 and the a/c line is leaking because it is sitting on the spring shackle. Has anyone experienced this problem? To me this is a factory defect. Who in there right mind would place an a/c line on a major suspension part. |

Completed this project today, along with door seal upgrade (different forum/thread).
This is not as easy as it sounds, especially for the back lines if you are not on ramps or a lift. I am 6'3" and 265 lbs so you can imagine me working under the ole X.
Got R mostly dun, tho.
Used 1/2" for project; snug fit. Engine compartment tedious, but doable.
Rear lines were a different story. Mid area abeam the running board was easy and accessible. Problem came with firewall and bottom of engine compartment. Other problem area was transition area from underneath into rear tire well. Had a really tough time and very tight tolerances for lines.
But completed it.
Couple of notes of interest (I hope).
Reinserting the lines into the clamps and the clamps holding the lines without them popping out was a real challenge. The insulation took up all the spacing between lines. Had to use zip ties to hold lines together and in individual bracket slots. Tight!, but did it.
Someone previously mentioned reusing the line shielding that was installed. Impossible if you use the "nerf sticks" pipe insulation. It was way too small.
Necessity (and frugality) is the mother of necessity. Fabricated new protective cover for insulation from 1 1/2" plastic corrugated hose. I used 25' sump pump hose and cut to length. MUCH cheaper than the real thing from an automotive store. Cut the tube lengthwise and spread to install over insulation. Fits like a charm.
As for center body to tire well transition, just plan hard to work. It didn't help that I didn't cut tube in small sections to install. Didn't want the gaps. It probably wouldn't help that much anyway.
Note to all: take the tire off. The area is significantly more accessible! I'm just a glutton for punishment and I have the scars and cuts on hands and forearms to prove it.
Haven't tested the fruits of my labor yet. But can tell significant difference just idling! The true test will be when we get back to 90+ degrees and 70+ percent humidity in Alabama and the Gulf Coast this week. Idling with AC is a heater!!! Run Max AC front and back with high speed on fans during middle of day to keep confortable, especially after sitting in sun for a little while. Of course, it doesn't help that the X is black.
Considering other options. Will post separately for responses.
Luv the forums for info.

Have seen references to using auxillary pusher fan in forum. Has anyone consider or actually used a replacement electric fan for the OEM engine fan?
Can't find any specs on OEM fan volume at given eng rpms. Was looking at a duel electric fan puller assembly to completely replace OEM.
Pulls 5500 cfm at max performance. Could install variable speed control and temp sensor for other than continuous max performance. Should not need auxillary with this setup, I would think.

Another idea: insulate (additional) the ceiling.
There is a thin layer of insulation with the headliner already. Considering possible benefit to adding additional with n structual supports. Haven't pulled headliner to investigate options yet.
Black X in summer gets a lot of radiant heat through ceiling, even with AC running.
If accessible, could use styro or blue board. Not sure batting would be worth effort due to small volume. Alternative is fill spaces with expanding foam, ensuring it doesn't interfer with any access requirements to electrical or HVAC venting or panel installation.
