A little off the subject, but related to maintaining a comfortable environment in X.
Window tint has really helped!
Tinted driver and front passenger to legal limit (32%)
Added after market reflective tint to all glass behind driver. Yes, in addition to factory tint. Result is near limo tint, but not quite. Used 20% / 35% reflective. This is not the silver. It has a metal film to increase heat and UV reflectance, but it is still smoke/dark, not silver. MAJOR reduction in radiant heat, especially with sun coming directly in respective window. Also used same on rear window.
THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK! IT IS ILLEGAL IN MOST STATES for highway use. My X is for off road recreational purposes. Yeah, right. Used 95% VLT UV block on windshield. Definitely helped. BTW, for the naysayers, a clear pane of glass reflects/difracts approx. 8% of the light; in other words, it has a 92% VLT.
Want to guess why only glass manufacturers can add tint to a windshield??? And they are allowed to add some degree of tint to the glass in exception the laws for windshield tinting, which is an afternarket restriction in almost all states. Does anyone happen to know this limit.
The net result is a major reduction of radiant heat from glass, which the X has a lot of.

I finished installation of the 5/8" today. It was a tough job. I think I spent about 5 or so hours on it. Was able to lay down under and do the work, but getting up in there between the springs in the rear was a challenge. Couldn't get the middle clamp back on with all 4 pipes, so zip tied the bottom to then others so it would be nice and snug. Insulation was too thick to get them all back in the clamp. Was able to get the other clamps on though with a lot of effort.
Wish I thought of looking for bilge pump hose. I ended up using the 1" corregated vinyl pipe from Lowes and it covered only 2/3's of the insulated pipe. I zip tied every few feet to hold it in place. Ran short of the corregated so next time I am out, will pick up some more. I think I used 20' (4 bags of 5') from Home Depot was $2.99 per bag, so compared to bilge hose, would have got the 1 1/2" which would have fit and would have been cheaper I am sure.
Not been able to test it out yet though. Did buy a temp probe at wally world tonight, so will begin to see the results in the next few days. Will let ya know how it turns out! |

The stretch of I-94 heading west through North Dakota on a sunny afternoon is brutal without window tint. I have 20% tint all around (on top of the factory tint). A very big difference. I like the privacy with the rear windows so dark, too.

I went to the legal limit on the side and back windows and I got complaints from the back passengers that it was too dark to see out at night
I also put a 5 inch strip across the top of the windshield for galre reduction - really liked it !!!!

finished doing the lines under the vehicle and zip tied the nerf insulation along the route. I have the sump line for "protection" however, with this thick neff foam:
Has anybody not added the plastic covering??
Also, for those who have done the engine compartment, any problem after time with the heat of the engine and the metallic wrapped foam... fire or smoke ???
any comments CHP...

Results:
Immediate 5 degree drop on idle...
Although I do not have a baseline for driving, I am getting temps of 48 degrees out of front vents The air is noticably colder and is it much more comfortable in the truck.
Differences from original method described by CHPMustang..:
Under Truck: Did not take lines out of clamps. Removed all reasonalby accessable OEM thin plastic cover and applied /taped silver foiled pipe insulation along length of cold charge lines and then covered that with the 5/8th foam insulation and tie wraped. It fit great....
Under Hood: Applied the silver foiled pipe insulation (FrostKing--Lowes) and covered those with the OEM plastic cover that I kept from under truck and tie wraped. That was also a good fit
Never applied the Sump tubing protection underneath... The Foam insulation should work well and probably will do just as good a job as that thin plastic OEM.
Took about 2 hours and worth every minute!
