I made my first attempt at having my ART rotors "turned" or resurfaced today. Went to a local Tires Plus (midwest chain of tire/auto shops) who attempted to resurface them but in the end claimed that slotted rotors couldn't be resurfaced because the bit on the lathe gets caught in the slots on the rotors.

Frustrated, I left (also replaced the last of my original Firestone tires w/ 80k+ miles on it) and found that the work that they had done did slightly improve the pulsating brakes. Whatever work they were able to accomplish on the front rotors seemed to have worked but apparently it was not up to their standards of resurfacing rotors. I didn't get charged but am posting to let everyone know if that if you do go to have your rotors resurfaced/turned/machined to let the shop know that they are slotted. They need to use a different bit in their lathe.

That said, I will be on a mission to find a shop that can resurface these rotors as I still need to get my rears done.

When I got home, I loosened all of the lug nuts on my tires and retorqued them to 155 ft-lbs (Ford spec is 150-165 ft-lbs). Not surprisingly, the lug nuts were at varying levels of torque as I loosened them.

Moral of the story, CHECK THE TORQUE ON YOUR LUG NUTS AFTER ANY BRAKE/TIRE SERVICE!

Eric, How long were your ART's on before they warped?? I seem to remember from a previous post that they warped after you had the tires rotated??? or something like that. Even so, how many miles had they gone?? I am about ready to replace mine and am wondering if the ART's are as great as previously thought.

Thanks

They certainly lasted a lot longer than the OEM rotors, but nothing can be invincible to warpage if the lug nuts are not torqued to spec. It goes along the same lines of torquing any nut/bolt/etc...if you've ever installed your own u-joints on a driveshaft, you'll know there's such a thing as overtorquing. If you overtorque your u-joint bolts, it is only a matter of time before they burn out because of excess heat generated by the housing being too tight around the bearings inside.

Some concept here. I am still happy with my purchase of ART rotors. I should have been smarter and protected my investment by inspecting torque on the lug nuts of my wheels after each tire rotation and/or tire swap. My experience today has forever changed my laziness in this regard. It took all of 10 minutes to properly torque my lug nuts after I got home.

I want to say that I put on 25,000 miles before I noticed the pulsating brakes..? OEM rotors would barely last 10,000 miles.

Well my ART's only have about 1000 miles on them, but so far I love them. The only one problem that I have now is that there's a squeak when I hit the pedal lightly. As soon as I hit it harder, the squeak goes away. Not a huge problem, but it does get annoying when you're in stop and go traffic with the windows down.

Mine squeaked for the first few hundred miles and then the squeaking went away.
