I've been dreaming about getting my very own Excursion since they first appeared in the Auto magazines, and the announcement of their untimely discontinuation has pushed me into finally going through with it. The wife and I have taken a number of test drives in different versions and have settled on the Limited 6.0 with the rear captain's chairs. The dealers in my area all insist we negotiate for anything better than MSRP. This is a substantial investment for us and we would like to get the best deal we can. Here are my questions:

1) When should I buy? Am I better off waiting for the bitter end and the hope that Ford will blow out the last 2004's or should I try for a rebated new 2003?

2) Is there a way to find out what rebates or discounting is planned for upcoming months?

3) Are there national dealers that I can go through or do I have to buy from someone in my state? How do I find a good dealer?

4) Is it better to order a 2004? We aren't in any hurry, but don't want to miss the chance to get a new one of our very own.

Thank you very much for your advice and consideration,

Bubba,

Welcome to the site and congratulations on taking the first step to owning an Excursion.

A few things:

Typically, dealerships will discount models when a new model year hits the showroom floor and/or lot. That said, if you are waiting for even more of a discount on what's already "out there", a good strategy would be to wait until this fall when 2004's are announced and delivered to dealerships. This of course assumes that your local dealers will still have inventory on 2003's. It's probably a safe assumption...even if your local dealerships don't have one, you could easily venture to surrounding cities/states. I see that you're in Madison -- you could make the trip to the twin cities to find one as well.

You are correct -- NEVER, NEVER, NEVER pay MSRP. Back in August of 2000 when I first purchased my "X", MSRP was 46,000 on it. I drove away having purchased it for just over 40,000.

Is it better to order a 2004? Possibly. Prices will no doubt go up on those models as they typically are better in the regards that changes have been made to improve quality, features, etc. I have not heard any rumors on the 2004 models so it is a mystery as to how they'll be equipped.

As far as finding a dealership: Ask around on various message forums on the Internet. This site site is an excellent resource, TheDieselStop.com is also helpful. Madison's a big city so there's plenty of folks out there from your area who are willing to throw in their $0.02 about the local dealerships.

Shop around, go with the dealership that gives you the best price and sales experience. You are not bound to them after your purchase as your warranty is good at any national Ford dealership. I purchased mine at a dealership who was up-front with me on the price but I take my "X" to a local Ford dealership that specializes in light/heavy truck service. I've had some poor experiences with dealerships that don't specialize in diesel servicing.

Hope this helps...any other questions just let us know!

I bought mine used. I could not justify paying like $40k for a 2003 model when 2002's were selling for so much less. I ended up paying $27k for my 2002 V10 Limited with 14k miles on it. It's just amazing how they drop in value so much.
