The X died on me tonight on the way back to the in-laws' after watching fireworks. Cruising along at about 40mph and the engine just died. 1/4 tank of fuel left, oil level is fine, nothing appears to be wrong. She cranks and cranks and cranks but just doesn't turn over. It doesn't appear to be the anti-theft system as it's not blinking erratically.
My only guess would be the fuel pump as it seems like the engine is not getting any fuel hence the reason it died and also why it doesn't turn over. Then again, it could be something as stupid as a fuse...but talk about impossible to troubleshoot!
Bad end to an otherwise great 4th of July & fireworks.

Eric, from everthing I've read on this board and others, don't rule out the cam position sensor either. They apparently are known to go out suddenly, and when they do, the symptoms are just like you had.
Some fellas even buy a spare in advance so they have one on hand. About $100 I think. The Power Stroke Registry magazine has had articles on how to replace them yourself.
Good luck!

Gary,
Yep, from my research, that's what I've concluded. Unfortunately the Ford dealership here in town (there's all of 2 dealerships in the area, my keys are in the key drop at one of them) decided to not be open this weekend so I'm stranded here until Monday.
I hope the cam position sensor is what it is...easy replacement for them, $100 deductible for me, and then yes, I'll purchase an extra one "just in case" for the future.

I had the same thing happen to my wife and the sensor was the remedy. It is a bad thing to happen but the fix should be easy. Let us know how it turns out. |

Got the X back today and thanks to responses here and research on other sites, I was able to tell Ford what to look for because they couldn't find the problem right away. It ended up being a bad cam position sensor.
As a side note, their "books" show that this item is not covered under warranty for some reason. I argued and ended up only having to pay the $100 deductable rather than the $450 they claimed it was going to cost me.
Thanks everyone.

My warranty does not have a deductable, but the total cost it would have cost me if the warranty did not cover it would have been 220 dollars. Sounds like your dealer is shady. |

The $100 deductible applies after the 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. The service manager and mechanic that worked on it both thought it would be a warranty item. The person at the cashier's desk really didn't know enough about vehicles to put two and two together, so I think it was just an honest mistake and a case of not really knowing anything about the parts being used. Fortunately I'm savvy enough to challenge this type of crap, I just hope "regular" folks are too.

Eric - Reading from my Premium Care brochure given to me at the time I purchased the Ford extended warranty:
"These are the ONLY parts NOT covered by ESP PremiumCARE
MECHANICAL - Service adjustments and cleaning, battery and cables, belts and hoses, brakes (front hub, drums, shoes, linings, disc rotors, pads), coolant, exhaust system (included catalytic converter), filters, fluids, lubricants, lights (bulbs, seald beam, lenses), manual clutch disk, shock absorbers, spark plugs and wires, squeaks and rattles, tires, tune-ups, wheel bearing, wheel alignment, wiper blades, wheel studs, and compressed natural gas/liquid propane fuel system components."
The fine print: "Certain restrictions and exclusions apply. See your dealer or your plan for details."
Don't see the cam position sensor anywhere in that list.
I plan to keep the brochure handy!
Glad you're back on the road.
