To give a little back ground information, under a year after buying my Excursion, the Turbo Pedistol went out. The local dealership fixed it under warranty since there was a TSB out.

Well, two weeks ago, right after I got it back from the 45K maintenance, black smoke started coming out of the pipe everytime we accelerated or slowed down. Now I understand that PSDs smoke, but in CA due to emissions, a new PSD is not suppose to.

We took it in and turns out the Turbo Pedistol was leaking oil. (I understand that PSD's leak oil, but forming a puddle under the vehicle is not good.) After further inspection they said that that Turbo Pedistol was bad and had to be replaced.

Has anyone else had problems?

I've only had problems with the o-rings leaking around the turbo. They have been replaced about 3 times and it looks like they could be leaking again which will make it time #4. Do you run a chip in your X? I do and I'm wondering if the change in boost with my chip is causing these o-rings to fail prematurely.

On a side note, mine never did smoke as the oil leaked down the backside of the engine. The first time around the dealer thought it was the rear main seal but it turned out to be the o-rings and the oil had just leaked down the rear of the block making it appear like it was the rear main leaking. A little inexperience on the dealership's part, thankfully I brought it to another dealership who was more competent.

I would recommend trying a differnet dealer, particularly one that deals with SuperDuty fleet vehicles. They typically have a good diesel mechanic on staff who will fix your problem once and for all.

If you are leaking oil, get it fixed. You do not want the seal to completely break loose causing all oil to leak out -- PSD fuel injectors rely on oil pressure to operate. Without oil pressure, your engine will not run and you will be left stranded. Ask me how I know.

No, its not chipped. I won't chip it till the warranty is out at 100K miles.

You've had the o-rings replaced 3 times already..... wow.

The oil leaking was the same problem. We drove the Excursion from SF Bay to Austin, TX and back and no oil leaks, so I am hoping the new turbo solved that problem.
