Everyone seems to be getting the ART rotors. How do you know they need replacement? I'm getting ready to service the brakes and were just going to have the rotors turned. Will they tell me they need to be replaced and thats when I do the swap or do I just keep turning them till I can't no more then swap? Just bought it in December with 38,000 miles and now has almost 50,000 have all receipts from prior owned on maintance and have never been replaced. Also whats the cost on the ART setup? Will I need to buy new pads and turn the rotors each time I service them with the ART's? The local Checker or Autozone give lifetime warrenty on pads and I believe rotors so just trying to wager the long cost? Thanks for all the help, Charles |

Charles,
The main reason "we all" initially went the ART rotor route was to alleviate brake rotor warpage that seems plauge the OEM Ford rotors on the Excursions. I replaced my OEM rotors long before they were worn out because I was sick of having to get them turned every 10,000 miles. After the bumper-to-bumper warranty was up on my Excursion, I had to pay for Ford to turn the rotors because it was no longer covered under warranty as brakes are "normal wear items."
This prompted me to search for alternative rotors that would last longer and hopefully fend off the dreaded rotor warpage. The ART rotors, while cryogenically frozen, are still susceptible to warpage. The common denominator seems to be improper torquing of your wheel's lug nuts. I have never owned a vehicle that was this sensitive to lug nut torque but for whatever reason, the Excursion is just this way.
The ART rotors offer improved braking as well as extended life because they are cryogenically frozen and slotted. They come with new brake pads when you order them. If you properly torque your lug nuts, you should never have to turn your rotors.
ART rotors are offered to members of FordExcursions.com/SuperFord.org for $590 + shipping.
Hope this helps.

I also need to do brakes on my X - I have about 35,000 miles and they are making noise - might be brake dust, but i doubt it on a 7000 lb vehicle. If you are interested in putting those ART brake kits on there is a dealer in Gilbert called SUperDuty Headquarters - they do lifts and all kinds of cool stuff. I'm gonna take my X up there ( I'm in Tucson) for a lift. I thought about getting that ART kit, but it's kind of alot of coin. I'll probably just put OEM rotor (if it needs it) and new pads on. I doubt the back will need to be replaced. Most wear occurs in the front and i don't tow anything. If you use SDDQ in Gilbert let me know what you think. |

Charles, I bought my X used with 18K miles, but when I got just over 50K I started having problems with brake chatter due to warped rotors. I went with the ART brakes and I'm very satisfied.
Recently, I've had two occaisions where traffic stopped quickly in front of me (and I wasn't paying enough attention ). Both times, the X stopped in time... even when I thought it wouldn't. They are definitely worth the extra $$.
Marty, when I had my ARTs installed, my mechanic told me that the rears were more worn than the front. And I recall someone else on this forum talking about the same experience. I do occasionally tow a 6K pound horse trailer and regularly have 20 bales of hay or 25 bags of shaving loaded in the back. But that wouldn't explain why the fronts don't wear more.
