An upgraded Hellwig front sway bar is a great addition to the rear sway bar. While not as dramatic as adding the rear, the x feels more buttoned down on the highway as well as handeling around town. My biggest surprize continues to be the perception that the chasis is stiffer as the truck shudders dramtically less on potholes, washboards and small bumps. Traversing a bump on a 45 degree angle no longer causes the x to pitch excessively side to side.
I think the x is great to start with, but now with x code springs, Bilstein 7100s, procomp steering stabilizer, centramatics, Michilen LTX m/s, velvet ride shackels, 1" shaved from the bumpstops with front and rear Hellwig swaybars, this thing handels and rides better than my 98 f150. Excellent. The x code springs and sway bars made the greatest difference of all the improvements.
I like this truck so much I may keep forever. What it needs now is a Kenne Bell supercharger and a full time four wheel drive transfer case. I can then add ARB air lockers front and rear. This is obviously an endless process. Also, a sirius satelite radio was added yesterday and what a great addition. We now have comercial free music in a rural area with limited radio stations. Great road trip machine!! |

Phil,
Post some pics of your eXcursion. I would be interested in seeing it. I'm about to install a chromed rear sway bar from ORU and the Donahoe dual steering stabilizer using bilstein 5100's. They should look good as I am also running bilstein 7100's with reservoirs. I already have the Kenne Bell SuperCharger. There always seems to be something more to add.

It will be a couple weeks for the pics, but will do. The eagle alloys I just added look pretty good. Do you have traction bars and if so do you like them? Do you like your supercharger and did fuel economy improve?
There is always something to add and it is certainly entertaining. |

I got rid of a lot of my X's wandering after installing a pair of radius-rods. They keep the rear axle in a controlled arc ... AND keep the wheelbase more constant from side to side. They work like traction bars, but unlike the factory traction bars, these also work when riding along and when braking. The factory bars work only under acceleration. The radius-rods also smoothed out the ride tremendously. No more feeling like the rear end is going to break loose when going around curves having a washboard surface.
The addition of a rear Hellwig sway bar helped a lot in sway control. Rancho RSX9000 shocks helped the ride a little. But by far, the biggest improvement has been the radius-rods. |
