am putting 37" PJ dirt grips on my excursion. What size spare are you guys using. Will a 35" work? I guess i will need a rear mount tire carrier too. I know the stoce 265-75-16 is too small

Why is the stock too small? Yes, it will sit a little askew, but you're only supposed to be using it to get you to the closest place to fix/replace your tire. If you're not planning on driving with it a long time or if you don't have an extreme lift I would suspect that the stock spare is fine.

Anyone else have any different experience? I plan on running with the stock spare when I put the 37's on as well so speak up!

If your rearend has limited slip, you should run the same size tire. Only if you have an open differential (i.e. on your front end) should you really ever consider running different size tires on the vehicle. You will prematurely wear out your limited slip because the clutch packs will always want to engage so that both wheels are spinning equally in the rear, but they won't be able to because of the size variation in the tires...one wheel will need to spin faster than the other.

Even running one smaller tire on front would prove to be a difficult drive because your front end probably won't track well and steering might be a little weird. It will be OK if you need to limp it a couple miles but I would not drive it down the highway for safety reasons. If you don't want to spend the $$ on a spare tire/wheel, consider getting a AAA card that has free towing up to 100 miles. It will most likely cost less than than a new tire/wheel that just sits in the back of your Excursion and takes up room.

One thing you should make certain is that the factory jack can even jack up your vehicle with the taller 37" tires on it!

I have been running oversized tires for 20 years. The last thing I want to try and do is get one off the ground with a factory jack - it's generally a losing effort especially if you have lots of suspension travel. I don't even think the factory jack would reach the bottom of my trucks frame at full extension with 5.5" of lift 35" tires. Spend a few bucks on a Hi-Lift jack and stick it in the back of the truck. They are good for lots of other things as well, like getting the frame off the ground if you drop a tire in a deep hole.

I also carry a complete high quality patch kit that is my real solution to the spare tire issue. Inspect your tires regularly and barring any catastrophic cuts you can usually plug just about anything until you can get a permanent patch on the tire or replace it. I have even done a couple of emergency sidewall puncture plugs that worked till the tire was replaced. Don't forget a little 12V air compressor to keep things pumped up.

The carrier inside the car is adjustable...Not sure if it would fit a 37 though!

Internal carrier barely works for a 285.
