Hey all. If any of you are interested in this then read on. I'm into fitness and natural health as much as possible and as such I use various supplements to try to help keep me fit. Recently I learned that some folks in congress are trying to regulate pretty much everything that falls into the category of supplements whether they're for nutrition, sports or health. This includes herbs as well as man-made products.

I actually read the entire content of the proposed bill and it doesn't seem too bad at first. It talks about making it mandatory that all adverse side effects of anything be reported to the FDA. Sounds good to me! Then it states that the FDA will have the authority to pull any product off the shelf based upon any single adverse report without further justification. Right now they can pull products but they need a valid reason. This new bill gives em carte blanche almost.

I kept reading and found that they want to pretty much make anything that can boost your metabolism a prescription drug. If it raises your heartrate, increases body heat, changes thyroid function, etc it will be prescription only. Hmmmm....there goes all the diet pills, natuarl herbal diet aids, green tea and CAFEINE! No more soda's with that good ol' jolt in em.

Yeah I'm being a bit melodramatic here but according to the bill it could happen.

There are a few more things that worry me too. They want to ban any product which states that it's use is for muscle growth. They're targeting some of the more recent steroids that don't fall under the old laws. However, by making the criteria the statement "for muscle growth" they're going to end up banning a lot more than that. I use protein supplements for my workouts. What does protein do? It builds muscle. Would you say that means it's "for muscle growth"? I think by now you're getting the picture.

At the bottom of this is an email I received concerning this with some great contact info. I think they sensationalize it a bit in the email to try to psych you up but it's still true. I've also included a couple of links for you as well.

If you care about any of this I ask you to take action. I've already sent out my buttload of letters! I hope you do too!

Dear Michael,

I have a very important, CRITICAL message to
share with you!

As you may have heard, Senator Richard Durbin
(D-Ill.) has introduced a bill (S.722) titled the
"Dietary Supplement Safety Act of 2003" that would
basically amend the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic
Act (FDCA) and possibly shake (and radically erode)
the foundation of the Dietary Supplement Health and
Education Act (DSHEA).

So, what does this mean to you...? A lot.

See, Sen. Durbin's attempt is aimed at removing some
of the MOST trusted and effective supplements from the
store shelves...

Prized supplements such as your favorite fat burner.

Any product promoted for muscle building... GONE.
(Under this new bill, it would be considered a "steroid.")

This new bill could take literally any product, like
creatine or your favorite protein supplement, and banish
it -- indefinitely!

Basically, if this bill passes, supplements would be
treated like drugs (rather than food)... and you
wouldn't be able to "freely" purchase certain supplements
any longer.

(For information on how to take action now, please scroll
to the bottom of this email; otherwise, keep reading.)

According to many critics, this bill would subject
nearly all vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and other
supplements to a level of scrutiny that is both unwarranted
and unnecessary.

Products that have been used safely for hundreds --
and in some cases, thousands -- of years would be subject
to clinical evaluation using standards that are at the
complete discretion of the FDA.

This is absurd, don't you think?! We think so...
that's why we are asking for your help.

The urgent new is...

This bill may be voted on THIS WEEK!

Your call to ACTION: If you are concerned that your rights
are being eroded (which, by now, I hope you do feel this way!),
I suggest you call your local senator(s) and tell them...

"Don't take away my right to use safe, affordable,
health-promoting dietary supplements!

"Oppose any amendment that limits my access to
vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary
supplements."

We've even listed each senator/state (who are members of
the Committee on Appropriations) and their telephone number
at the bottom of this email, plus a brief example of what you
can say once you contact them.

Once again, your help in this urgent matter is not only
needed, but the life (or death) of the sale of supplements
as we know it may depend on it!

I can appreciate too, if you feel that you would rather not
comment today. Thank you for listening anyway.

With respect,

Stephen Adele

P.S. See below for what to do as well as some
helpful "talking points" to help you with your call.

--------------------------------------------------

>>> HERE'S WHAT TO DO:

1) Forward this email to 10 people you know who live in your
state or the states of members of this committee.

2) Call the capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or committee
members directly at the numbers listed below.

3) Ask for your senator by name, and the switchboard operator will
patch you through to his/her office. When you reach your senator's
office, ask to leave a message for the senator.

5) Use the talking points below or deliver a personal message.
Be sure to insist on leaving your name and address and ask for
a letter back. As a constituent, you deserve to know how your
senator acts on your request.

>>> HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN SAY:

"I'm calling to ask the senator to vote against any amendment
to the appropriations bill that will limit my right to use
safe, affordable, health-promoting dietary supplements.

"I believe more needs to be done to ensure that:

"The Food and Drug Administration enforces the current law,
and government doesn't limit the freedom of choice of American
consumers when it comes to their health. Safe, effective, and
affordable dietary supplements should not be unfairly singled out.

"I would like the senator to write me back to tell me how
he/she voted on any dietary supplement amendment to the
appropriations bill."

"Thank you."

---------------------------------------------------

I sincerely thank you for making the call and doing your part!

Will beer become a prescription drug?

I think it qualifies as a muscle enhancer when taken in mass quantities. At least that's what I see when the bars close and all the guys are showing off their beer muscles by fighting each other.
