Well, we're getting ready to leave for the shore tonight and guess what happens? Yep car problems with the car we want to take. It's our 2001 Excursion, last night the "service engine" light came on. It still runs good and I couldn't notice any difference in drivability. If it's a self correcting problem will the light go out? Mine hasn't, it's still on. The Excursion sat for a few days and had a little "miss". I the past, that "miss" usually worked its way out within a few miles. Could that "miss" have trigger the service engine light?
On my Explorer, if the light is triggered and the problem isn't serious, it will either go out or "re-set" when I turn the engine off. That's not happening with the Excursion.
I don't think the dealer will be able to schedule the Excursion today, I'll try though. Otherwise I was going to drive with the light "on" and wing it.
Any opinions welcome.
thanks
Len

Len,
Bummer about the SES light going on. I have had the light come on once during my ownership and it was due to overboost because of a chip I was running at the time. The vehicle still drove fine for a week while it was on and naturally while I was driving it to the Ford dealership to have it looked at, the SES light finally went off. The code does stay in memory even if the light goes off.
If you are having a "miss" problem, I would get it looked at. Since it magically fixed itself before, it may do it again, but it sounds like you've got somewhat of an electrical/sensor gremlin. If the light is on, Ford should be able to take a look at and know what the problem is fairly quickly.
In my personal opinion, I would have it looked at before your trip...better than getting stranded while on the road.

Each engine is different, but my diesel '03 6.0L 4x4 Ex has had four SES lights in the 8K miles I've had it.
Twice my SES light came on and both times it was the fuel cap.... DuH :o)
I love my wife for a LOT of things... but mechanicals and directions are NOT her forte!
And the two other times... I did the twist the fuel cap and it stayed on, but later went off...
Not sure what caused it, but haven't taken it in yet... runs too good to chance someone 'fixin' something that's not broke !

Thanks guys. The dealer managed to loook at the X early this morning. He said it turned out that cylinder #1 was miss-firing. He replaced the plug and the coil. I didn't know each plug had its own coil. WE're back on the road again.

Funny you should mention that. My wife called me up today and was alittle frantic, said the Galaxie would not start. This was the first time I've let her drive it since I built up the topend on it last summer. It's a little too much motor for her little lead foot, IMHO. Anyway, I had just worked through several starting problems a week ago and thought that something else was going to be wrong and was imaging what I'd need to spend money on THIS time.
Turns out she left the headlights on and drained the battery. All I could do was laugh.
She'd kill me if she saw this post.
