I was very happy to have stumbled onto this forum. There are a few out there and this one seems to be the best so far.
Anyway.... My wife and I are 'splersion owners as of a week ago yesterday. We bought a cherry '01 preowned Limited with the 6.8L.
Here's a little history for ya:
Recently we decided we needed to be prepared for little ones, even though they're not yet on the way (long story). We owned a Suburban and loved it; it was just too old and tired. So, we traded that in on a '99 F250SD with the Powersmoke and absolutely loved it - but missed the 'Burban. Well, last week the F250 was traded in on the above. We wanted to find a preowned diesel but, boy! Once they're found, they're already sold, it seems. No way I was going to pay $45K+ for a new one. I hate to say it, but we settled for the V10. I could say that a week ago; hard to say "settled" now, though. I really like this engine! This 'splersion is really the best of both worlds for us. We wanted the roominess of the 'Burban but need to be able to pull our 4350# rock-crawling Jeep on its 1500# trailer. I actually had the opportunity to do that the other day when my Jeep broke down. The 'splersion pulled it like a dream! The real test will come soon when I drag the Jeep out to my favorite off-road spot 2½ hours east of home.
Now...
I have a question. Other than jacking up the rear of this 6300# behemoth and checking the wheel to driveshaft turn ratio, what is the easiest way to find out what ratio differential I have? Is there some VIN database which can give me that info? A tag or stamp on my differential? I know it's either the 3.73 or the 4.30.
TIA!
Kevin

Thanks! Already love it
As for the gear ratio... judging by the RPMs at 70, like Mr. Birdman suggested, I suspect I have 3.73s. There are 2 tags on the diff - one stating the type of oil to use, and the other with some sort of code which I believe to be the ratio info, et al. Anyone know how to decipher it?
TIA!

With stock 265 tires, your rpms at 70 mph should be right at 2000. I have 285 tires and I run just under 2000 rpm at 70 with my 3.73:1 rear end.
Congratulations on the new ride.

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated. Kinda glad I don't have the 4.30's really. 'Not pulling a 12-horse trailer or anything like that.

You might ask gearman...once he told me to give him the codes and he would tell me what gears I had. I never did get back to him . |

Welcome Kevin
if you want to pm me your vin# i will call my friends at Ford and get the info. if you look at one of your tags on the diff. one tag will tell you what kind of lube to put in and the other tag will tell you what size ring and pinion gear and ratio. the numbers will all be together and tough to decipher but look for -3.73-4.10.4.30 mixed in amongst the other numbers.
