So I have had an X now for almost a year and just about had it with the bumpy front end ride. The previous owner installed Ranco 9000's and I have seen other posts on this board talking about Monroe Reflex shocks. I am of the opinion that in order for the X to meet antiroll requirements that Ford installs a thicker/more limiting bump stop on the front suspension to keep the chassis from rolling under brake dive conditions. So my question is have any of you addressed this with your X by either shocks alone? Lift? or cutting some material off the front bump stops to keep the front end from riding on them? I wouldnt mind lifting, but have no ambitions of running more then a 35" as I have 33" tires now on stock rims. These front ends are bad enough with stock rims at eating up from bearings/spindles without going wider. Anyhow any info or shared experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks
bobby

Everything about my suspension is stock except that I run Rancho RS9000's all the way around (setting #2 up front, #3 in the rear) and a Hellwig anti-sway bar in the rear. I'm quite pleased with the ride quality, but then again, I switched to the Excursion after driving a '97 F250 HD Powerstroke pickup. The Excursion is a plush ride compared to the suspension on the pre-99 3/4-ton pickups.

I see a lot of complaints about the ride quality in Excursions. It's not as stable as a SuperDuty 3/4 or 1-ton pickup, but then again, it weighs more, is more top heavy, and doesn't have the same suspension travel.

If you must do anything, I would upgrade the front springs on your Excursion to the V-code springs (I believe). This will require switching to a taller shock, but you can get OEM Ford springs for your X and you'll get increased travel in your front suspension.

I also think that running 33" tires on stock rims is a major contribution to your ride quality complaints. I haven't had any bearings or spindles get eaten up. That's a much heavier tire for the already short-travel front springs to handle.

The 33" tire can contribute to wandering, but does smooth out the ride as far as the bumps go down the interstate. I had to replace one spindle already and the other is not far behind. My buddy owns a very reputalbe 4x4 shop in Florida and he keeps Ford spindles in stock because they are so often failing. I would love to be able to plop down $1500 on the Dynatrac bearing solution which converts it to old style taper bearings, it addresses every bit of wandering with the X. I will probably upgrade the front springs and maybe even shave off a tad of the bottom out bumper if I cant get the front end off of them. I literally have a polished surface on my front spring keeper plate where the bumpstop rubs. Tires dont rub or anything of the sort, I simply wish to correct the floating on bumpstop feeling I get. The V rated spring is new to me, knew there was something different from the F350 springs, but I couldnt get a Ford parts guy around here who knew any difference. I would like to get a rear sway bar since it appears the '03 has a factory setup I could probably bolt on.

You can find all kinds of info on spring upgrades for the Excursion at www.thedieselstop.com

Go in the Excursion forum and do a search on springs, front springs, or v codes (u codes and x codes are the other common springs).

I guy by the user name of "Bruce1954" (something like that) has lots of info on this topic.

good luck

Never thought about a lift in my X but I have been seeing more and more of them and they look real good... Can't lift mine as it will no longer fit in the work garage so i was thinking about a 3 inch leveling kit (heard good things about the EDGE version)... Has anyone any pictures of a X leveled off? Current additions are Monro Reflex shocks, I like the ride a lot better , dvd system for the girls, GoodYear 305x70x16, makes the truck look down right mannish , stainless bug shield ...

Appreciate all responses

I assume you have a 4x4 and obviously it's stock height. Do the 305's fit without rubbing? I think 285's are a must, but 295 or 305 might be even better as long as their height doesn't get out of control......

Jim,

Yes, the "X" is a 4x4 and stock height & springs and there is no rubbing whatsoever
